1.1 This guide assists individuals or agencies in identifying suitable locations and choosing appropriate sampling strategies for monitoring atmospheric deposition at non-urban locations. It does not purport to discuss all aspects of designing atmospheric deposition monitoring networks. 1.2 The guide is suitable for use in obtaining estimates of the dominant inorganic constituents and trace metals found in acidic deposition. It addresses both wet and dry deposition and includes cloud water, fog and snow. 1.3 The guide is best used to determine estimates of atmospheric deposition in non-urban areas although many of the sampling methods presented can be applied to urban environments. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.

This document specifies a measurement method for the determination of particulate benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in ambient air, which can be used in the framework of the Council Directive 96/62/EC [1] and the Directive 2004/107/EC [2]. This document specifies performance characteristics and performance criteria for the measurement method when it is used as a reference method. The performance characteristics of the measurement method are based on a sampling period of 24 h. This document describes a measurement method which comprises sampling of BaP as part of the PM10 particles, sample extraction and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with fluorescence detector (FLD) or by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC/MS). The method is applicable for the measurement of BaP in the concentration range from approx. 0,04 ng/m3 to approximately 20 ng/m3. The lower limit of the applicable range depends on the noise level of the detector and the variability of the laboratory filter blank. NOTE If the BaP concentration exceeds the calibration range the extract can be diluted.

This European Standard specifies the following requirements: a) requirements for measurement sections and sites with respect to performing emission measurements; b) requirements for the measurement objective, plan and report of emission measurements of air pollutants and reference quantities to be carried out in waste gas ducts at industrial plants. This European Standard applies to periodic measurements using manual or automated reference methods (RM). This European Standard specifies generic principles which can be applied to perform emission measurements at different plant types and to meet different measurement objectives. NOTE The measurement objective is specified by the customer. The testing institute identifies the measurement objective and related regulatory requirements at the beginning of the measurement planning. Where measurements are being made for regulatory purposes, the customer should seek approval from the competent authority. This European Standard specifies procedures for taking representative samples in waste gas ducts. This European Standard specifies a procedure for finding the best available sampling point for automated measuring systems used for continuous monitoring of emissions. The planning and reporting aspects of this European Standard are applicable to emission measurements at diffusive and fugitive emission sources. This European Standard does not address aspects of structural safety of chimneys and ducts, construction of working platforms and safety of personnel using them.

It applies the general recommendations of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (GUM) to boundary conditions met in air quality measurement. The boundary conditions considered include measurands varying rapidly in time, as well as the presence of bias in a series of observations obtained under conditions of intended use of methods of air quality measurement. The methods of measurement considered comprise - methods corrected for systematic effects by repeated observation of reference materials, - methods calibrated by paired measurement with a reference method, - methods not corrected for systematic effects because they are unbiased by design, and - methods not corrected for systematic effects in intended use deliberately taking into account a bias. Experimental data for uncertainty estimation can be provided either by a single experimental design in a direct approach or by a combination of different experimental designs in an indirect approach.

This part of ISO 16000 describes the use of single tracer gas for determining the local mean age of air as an indicator of ventilation conditions in a building. The procedures include concentration decay and homogeneous constant emission. The described methods are intended for air quality studies and can be used for a) checking whether the building ventilation requirements are met, b) estimating the adequacy of ventilation in buildings with indoor air quality problems, and c) characterizing the strength and distribution of indoor emission sources. In principle, the methods can be applied to all indoor spaces, regardless of the type of ventilation used and the state of mixing of air between zones. The prevailing ventilation conditions need not be disturbed by the measurement. This part of ISO 16000 does not address the details of the analytical methods for tracer gases. The availability of such analysis services should be checked before planning actual field measurements.

This part of ISO 16000 is intended as an aid to planning volatile organic compound (VOC) indoor pollution measurements. In the case of indoor air measurements, the careful planning of sampling and the entire measurement strategy are of particular significance since the result of the measurement may have farreaching consequences, for example, with regard to the need for remedial action or the success of such an action. An inappropriate measurement strategy may contribute to the complete uncertainty of the measurement result in a larger extent than the measurement procedure itself. This part of ISO 16000 uses the definition for indoor environment defined in ISO 16000-1.
