This European Standard specifies the requirements for inspection and maintenance of LPG cylinder valves for reuse. It applies when the valve is inspected, repaired or refurbished at the time of periodic inspection of the cylinder. The periodic inspection of cylinders is described in EN 1440, EN 14795, EN 14914, and EN 14767. This European Standard may also be applied at any other time, for example when maintenance of the valve is necessary.

ISO 15996:2005 specifies requirements for residual pressure valves, with or without a non-return function, for gas cylinders and the methods of testing such valves, for type approval. ISO 15996:2005 is applicable to valves to be fitted to gas cylinders of up to 150 l water capacity, intended to contain compressed, liquefied or dissolved gases. ISO 15996:2005 does not cover valves for fire extinguishers, cryogenic equipment or liquefied petroleum gas.

This part of BS 341 specifies requirements for the selection and dimensions of outlet connections, for valves used with transportable gas cylinders manufactured for the conveyance and storage of permanent, liquefied and dissolved gases for industrial applications. This part of BS 341 does not include requirements for the selection of valve outlets for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), medical applications conforming to BS EN 850 or for ultra-high-purity gases used in the micro-electronics industry. This part of BS 341 applies to outlets for valves limited to a charging pressure of 300 bar (developed pressures for particular gases might exceed this pressure). A list of alternative outlets for the less commonly used gases imported into the United Kingdom is given in Annex A. note: 1) 1 bar = 10N/m = 100 kPa.
