This document specifies a standard reference zero for the scale of hearing threshold level applicable to pure-tone air conduction audiometers, to promote agreement and uniformity in the expression of hearing threshold level measurements throughout the world. It states the information in a form suitable for direct application to the calibration of audiometers, that is, in terms of the reference equivalent threshold sound pressure levels of generic supra-aural earphones specified in 4.2, measured on an ear simulator complying with IEC 60318-1 and in terms of modelspecific data given in two additional tables for the IEC 60318-3 acoustic coupler and the IEC 60318-1 ear simulator, respectively. The data are based on an assessment of the information available from the various standardizing laboratories responsible for audiometric standards and from scientific publications. Some notes on the application and derivation of the reference levels are given in Annexes A and B.

This document specifies the performance requirements for three classes of sound calibrator: class LS (Laboratory Standard), class 1 and class 2. Acceptance limits are smallest for class LS and greatest for class 2 instruments. Class LS sound calibrators are normally used only in the laboratory; class 1 and class 2 are considered as sound calibrators for field use. A class 1 sound calibrator is primarily intended for use with a class 1 sound level meter and a class 2 sound calibrator primarily with a class 2 sound level meter, as specified in IEC 61672-1. The acceptance limits for class LS sound calibrators are based on the use of a laboratory standard microphone, as specified in IEC 61094-1, for demonstrations of conformance to the requirements of this document. The acceptance limits for class 1 and class 2 sound calibrators are based on the use of a working standard microphone, as specified in IEC 61094-4, for demonstrations of conformance to the requirements of this document. To promote consistency of testing of sound calibrators and ease of use, this document contains three normative annexes - Annex A "Pattern evaluation tests", Annex B "Periodic tests", Annex C "Pattern evaluation report", and two informative Annexes - Annex D "Relationship between tolerance interval, corresponding acceptance interval and the maximum-permitted uncertainty of measurement" and Annex E "Example assessments of conformance to specifications of this document". This document does not include requirements for equivalent free-field or random-incidence sound pressure levels, such as can be used in the overall sensitivity adjustment of a sound level meter. A sound calibrator can provide other functions, for example, tonebursts. Requirements for these other functions are not included in this document.

This document specifies the calibration of vibration transducers with built-in calibration coils in laboratory and in situ. In laboratory, the method described can be applied to calibrate the vibration sensitivity and electrical sensitivity, and to obtain the coefficient of calibration coil. In situ, it can be used to calibrate the electrical sensitivity and vibration sensitivity using electrical instrumentation. This document specifies the instrumentation and procedure for performing calibrations of vibration transducers with built-in calibration coils in the frequency range typically from 0,1 Hz to 100 Hz. The expanded uncertainty can be evaluated using the method given in this document.

This part of IEC 60645 specifies general requirements for audiometers designed for use in determining hearing threshold levels, relative to standard reference threshold levels established by means of psychoacoustic test methods, and those designed to perform psychoacoustic tests using speech material. The object of this standard is to ensure: a) that tests of hearing in the frequency range 125 Hz to 16 kHz on a given human ear, performed with different pure-tone audiometers which comply with this standard, give substantially the same results; b) that the results obtained represent a valid comparison between the hearing of the ear tested and the reference threshold of hearing; c) that a means of presenting speech material to a subject in a standardized manner is provided. This will ensure that tests of hearing using a specific speech signal and a specific manner of signal presentation, when performed with different audiometers which comply with this standard, give substantially the same results; d) that audiometers are classified according to the range of test signals they present, according to the mode of operation or according to their presumed primary application.

This Technical Specification specifies requirements for instruments that measure sound intensity using pairs of pressure sensing microphones with respect to their immunity to power- and radio-frequency fields and to electrostatic discharge, and the permitted radio-frequency emissions, together with test procedures to verify conformance. Sound intensity measuring instruments are available in many different configurations and may be powered by batteries or from external power supply systems. The technical requirements in this Technical Specification apply to all configurations of instruments for the measurement of sound intensity. The electromagnetic and electrostatic compatibility requirements are equally applicable to sound intensity measuring instruments used in residential, commercial and light-industrial environments, or industrial sites. The requirements of this Technical Specification are additional to those contained in IEC 61043 and do not alter any of the specifications contained therein. The requirements do not apply retrospectively to sound intensity measuring instruments complying with IEC 61043 prior to the publication of this Technical Specification. NOTE 1 Compliance with this Technical Specification does not insure that the sound intensity measuring system is immune to interference from all electromagnetic sources. NOTE 2 These requirements are the first attempt at defining electromagnetic and electrostatic compatibility requirements for sound intensity measuring systems. Requirements can be changed later when wider experience has been gained if found necessary.
