This International Standard specifies a method for determining the optical rotation of essential oils. When dealing with solid oils, partially solid oils, oils that are highly viscous at room temperature, or highly coloured oils, this determination is carried out on a solution of the oil.

A small quantity of the oils is analyzed by gas chromatography under specified conditions on a packed column. The safrole and cis- and trans-isosafrole contents are determined by using the internal standard method. As stationary phase are used polydimethylsiloxane, or polyethylene glycol 20000. Operating temperatures: Oven: isotherm about 100 鳦 when using polydimethylsiloxane; isotherm about 125 鳦 when using polyethylene glycol 20000. Injection system and detector: about 170 鳦.

To distinguish essential oils from fixed oils, the expression "oil of ..." shall be used. The commonly accepted trivial name of the plant shall follow these words. When no trivial name exists, the complete botanical name shall be used instead. If more than one part of the plant can be used for the extraction of essential oil, the name of the part employed shall follow the trivial name of the plant. If necessary the name of the country or area the plants are coming from shall precede the trivial name and the method used for obtaining the essential oil shall be indicated after a comma at the end of the title. Examples for English and French nomenclature are given.
