This standard allows to specify design points (summer and winter) for air temperature, water vapour content, and enthalpy, to be used in the calculation of heating, ventilating and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems in Europe, and can serve as a basis for the analysis of annual energy consumption according to the individual-frequency method. In addition to information regarding the correlations between the air temperature and the water vapour content, a wind statistic including wind speeds and wind directions is provided for each station, thus delivering insight into any non-standard heat transfer conditions to be expected. At the suggestion of REHVA, a compilation of data from 122 stations in Europe, allowing the same processing quality in the vicinity of the stations as for the German stations, is presented here on the basis of the same time period as for Germany (1991 to 2005). For these 122 European stations, the same procedure and basic analysis have been chosen. It is a harmonised proposal which, although surely not meeting all national procedures of system design, provides a good synopsis of the respective climatic situation.

Since 1979, it has been common practice, particularly in DIN 4710, to compile the basic data of outdoor-air temperature (t) and water vapour content (x) in the form of t-x correlations. Initially, the data from 1951 to 1970 served as the basis for West Germany. When the standard was revised in 2003, in cooperation with the DWD (German Meteorological Service), the data gathered at 15 stations between 1961 and 1990 were published. The concept for the compilation of the correlation tables of air temperature and water vapour content in air, the so-called t-x correlations, so far consisted in using the respective hourly values measured over the 30 years of the currently completed climate normal period, i. e. presently from 1961 to 1990. Since the end of the nineteen-eighties, the air temperature has kept rising. To give better consideration to the obvious climate change in the air-temperature regime when planning building services, the t-x correlations have been re-calculated, and published in this VDI guideline, for the 15-year period from 1991 to 2005, which corresponds to half of the current climate normal period.

Strictly speaking, the meteorological data presented in this guideline are only valid in the immediate vicinity of the stations given. The local orographic structure, landscape and the buildings determine how far extrapolations of the data can be extended into the surrounding regions. In analogy to DIN 4710, which gives the pertinent data for Germany, the monthly data are averaged according to energy input and are suitable for the assessment of installations in terms of energy efficiency and, giving due consideration to extreme conditions, for dimensioning air-conditioning installations. As in DIN 4710, technical calculation methods for the application of the data are not given.

This standard primarily applies to the calculation of energy consumption and provides assistance for the simulation calculation of heating and air conditioning systems without repeating the documents of degree day procedures. The tables and explanations of climatic data contained in this standard represent the basis for single views, approximation calculations and also for detailed all-season thermal simulation. In this standard no computing procedures are indicated for further processing of the data.#,,#
