The standard describes the production technology for wood-based panels and identifies the emission-relevant operations as well as the sources of waste and waste water generation. It indicates measures for preventing and reducing emissions to air as well as waste and waste water generation according to the state of the art. It proposes achievable emission values reflecting the above mentioned measures and provides emission measurement instructions.

This guideline applies to facilities and appliances for the combustion of wood and wood-based panels including the resulting waste - particularly in the wood machining and processing industry - to the extent the wood fuel is free from wood preservatives and coating materials containing halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals. Facilities and appliances for the combustion of wood and wood-based panels likely to contain halogenated organic compounds and heavy metals as a result of treatment with wood preservatives or coating are covered by guideline VDI 3462 Part 5. The facility-specific emission measurement instructions are given in VDI 3462 Part 6.

This guideline applies to combustion systems burning wood and wood-based panels treated with wood preservatives or containing halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals as a result of coating, and the resulting waste streams. These types of facility are subject to the provisions of Section 8.1 of the annex to 4. BImSchV in conjunction with 17. BImSchV (German Federal Immission Control Ordinances Nos. 4 and 17). Facilities and appliances for the combustion of wood and wood-based panels, which are not treated with wood preservatives and not coated with materials containing halogenated organic compounds or heavy metals, are covered by VDI 3462 Part 4. Further processes and operations involved in wood machining and processing are described in guidelines VDI 3462 Part 1 to Part 3. The emission measurement instructions applicable to all parts of the VDI 3462 guideline series are given in VDI 3462 Part 6. The applicable safety rules and regulations remain unaffected by this guideline. For safety-relevant plant equipment in terms of the German Major Accidents Ordinance (12. BImSchV), additional measures beyond those described in this guideline may be required on a case-by-case basis. Reference is made to the German laws, ordinances, administrative and other regulations applicable to the construction and operation of the facilities covered by this guideline (see Bibliography). Unless expressly stated otherwise, all gas volumes indicated in this guideline relate to standard temperature and pressure conditions (273 K, 1013 hPa) after deduction of the water vapour content.

The facility-specific measurement instructions given in this guideline apply to the complete VDI guideline series for the wood machining and processing industry, i.e. Rough timber working (VDI 3462 Part 1), Production of wood-based panels (VDI 3462 Part 2), Machining and processing of wood and woodbased panels (VDI 3462 Part 3), Combustion of wood and wood-based panels not containing wood preservatives and halogenated organic compounds (VDI 3462 Part 4), Combustion of wood and wood-based panels containing wood preservatives and/or halogenated organic compounds (VDI 3462 Part 5) These measurement instructions apply to all facilities in the wood machining and processing industry regardless of whether or not they are subject to a permit. Reference is made to the laws, ordinances, administrative and other regulations applicable to the construction and operation of the specific facilities.

Diese ?NORM behandelt die Emissionsbegrenzungen für Anlagen, die die im folgenden angeführten Staubarten in die Au?enluft emittieren. Sie ist nur für den station?ren Betriebszustand anzuwenden. Die St?ube werden bei der Holzbe- und -Verarbeitung sowie bei dem dazu notwendigen innerbetrieblichen Transport in mechanischen oder pneumatischen F?rdersystemen emittiert. Diese ?NORM gilt nichtfür Anlagen zur Herstellung von Span-und Faserplatten sowie für Anlagen in der Papier- und Zellstoffindustrie. Es sind nachstehend angeführte staubf?rmige Stoffe zu unterscheiden: Nach der Zusammensetzung: (1) Holzstaub, rein (2) Holzst?ube mit organischen und anorganischen Stoffen - Holz/Bindemittel (z. B. bei Spanplatten) - Holz/Beschichtungsmaterialien (z. B. Lacke, Folien) - Holz/Holzschutzmittel (z. B. gegen Pilze, Insekten, Feuer, Feuchtigkeit) (3) Mischst?ube von Verbundwerkstoffen (z. B. Holz/Kunststoff, Holz/Mineralstoff) (4) Rinden- und Korkstaub. Nach der Entstehung: Bei der Holzbe- und -Verarbeitung entstehen staubf?rmige Stoffe u. a. durch (1) S?gen (2) Hacken (3) Zerspanen (4) Mahlen (5) Schleifen (6) Bohren. Im allgemeinen werden für die Abscheidung von St?uben bei der Holzbe- und -Verarbeitung folgende Arten von Abscheidern eingesetzt: (1) Massenkraftabscheider (2) filternde Abscheider (3) na?arbeitende Abscheider (4) elektrische Abscheider (5) kombinierte Abscheider. Diese ?NORM geh?rt zu der in der ?NORM M 9450 erw?hnten Serie von ?NORMEN und ist im Zusammenhang mit der ?NORM M 9450 anzuwenden.
