This International Standard provides technical information on the design of textile machinery with reduced noise emissions. Textile machines with a significant noise hazard are defined in This International Standard supports the technical designer with the development of low-noise textile machinery. For this purpose, the significant sources of noise of the individual types of textile machines and suitable noise control measures are described. Elements needed for the operation of the textile machine, which are, however, not part of the textile machine, are not covered by this International Standard (e.g. elements for transportation of process material, elements for provision of media).

This part of ISO 9902, taken together with ISO 9902-1, specifies the mounting, operating and measuring conditions required for the measurement, declaration and verification of noise emitted by fabric manufacturing machinery. It is applicable to engineering (grade 2) and survey (grade 3) methods, in accordance with the International Standards to which it makes normative reference. This part of ISO 9902 covers the different types of weaving and knitting machines defined in ISO 5247 and ISO 7839, respectively. It is applicable to full-width weaving machines with shuttles, with rigid, telescopic or flexible rapiers, with projectiles, and to those with weft insertion by hydraulic (waterjet) or by pneumatic (airjet) nozzle. It is also applicable to narrow fabric weaving machines with weft insertion by shuttles or needles, to other weaving machines of the multi-phase and circular weaving types, and to Jacquard machines. This part of ISO 9902 is applicable to knitting machinery including circular knitting, flat bed knitting, warp knitting, Raschel, cotton (flat weft weaving) and stitch bonding machines.

This part of ISO 9902 gives requirements for carrying out, efficiently and under standardized conditions, the determination, declaration and verification of basic noise emission quantities common to the types of textile machinery dealt with in ISO 9902-2 to ISO 9902-7. It specifies noise measurement methods, as well as the mounting and operating conditions, to be used for this noise test code. This part of ISO 9902 is applicable to all machinery, plant and equipment given in accordance with ISO 11 111 (all parts) , including equipment enabling the automated operation of machines and processes for single machines or complex installations, but excluding equipment for transportation between the machine interfaces. NOTE 1 The measurement of the peak, C-weighted, instantaneous sound pressure value at workstations is not dealt with in this part of ISO 9902, since peak sound pressures sufficient to require such measurement are not to be expected from textile machines. NOTE 2 For each textile machine, two parts of ISO 9902 will normally need to be used: this part and the relevant, specific part of ISO 9902.
