It applies to coatings: - with or without chromate, - with or without top coat, - with or without lubricant (integral lubricant and/or subsequently added lubricant). It applies to bolts, screws, studs and nuts with ISO metric thread, to fasteners with non-ISO metric thread, and to non-threaded fasteners such as washers, pins and clips. Consideration for design and assembly of coated fasteners are given in Annex A. This document does not specify requirements for such fasteners properties as weldability or paintability. It does not apply to mechanically applied zinc coatings.

It is applicable to coatings: — with or without hexavalent chromium; — with or without top coat; — with or without lubricant (integral lubricant and/or subsequently added lubricant). It is applicable to bolts, screws, studs and nuts with ISO metric thread, to fasteners with non-ISO metric thread, and to non-threaded fasteners such as washers, pins, clips, etc. This document does not specify requirements for such fastener properties as weldability or paintability. It is not applicable to mechanically applied zinc coatings. NOTE Coatings in accordance with this document are especially used for high strength fasteners (≥ 1000 MPa) to avoid risk of internal hydrogen embrittlement (IHE — see 4.4). Information for design and assembly of coated fasteners is given in Annex A.

Die vorliegende Internationale Norm legt Anforderungen an nichtelektrolytisch aufgebrachte Zinklamellenuberzuge fur Verbindungselemente aus Stahl fest. Die Norm gilt fur folgende Uberzuge: mit oder ohne Chrom(VI); mit oder ohne Deckschicht; mit oder ohne Schmierstoff (integrierter und/oder nachtraglich aufgebrachter Schmierstoff). Nationale Vorschriften fur die Einschrankung oder das Verbot bestimmter chemischer Elemente sollten in den betreffenden Landern oder Regionen berucksichtigt werden. Die Norm gilt fur Schrauben und Muttern mit metrischem ISO-Gewinde, fur Verbindungselemente mit nichtmetrischem Gewinde und Verbindungselemente ohne Gewinde, wie Scheiben, Stifte, Clips usw. ANMERKUNG Uberzuge nach dieser Internationalen Norm werden besonders bei hochfesten Verbindungselementen (1000 MPa) verwendet, um das Risiko einer fertigungsbedingten Wasserstoffversprodung (siehe 4.4) zu vermeiden. Hinweise zur konstruktiven Ausfuhrung und der Montage beschichteter Verbindungselemente sind in Anhang A aufgefuhrt. Die vorliegende Internationale Norm legt keine Anforderungen an Eigenschaften von Verbindungselementen wie Schweisbarkeit oder Lackierbarkeit fest. Sie gilt nicht fur mechanisch aufgebrachte Zinkuberzuge.

This part of BS?7371?specifies requirements for sherardized coatings on iron and steel fasteners and accessories applied by thermal diffusion of zinc powder onto a component’s surface. NOTE Hydrogen embrittlement is not induced as a result of this coating process. The coating consists of zinc/iron alloys, which are subsequently treated using either a zinc phosphate treatment (see BS 7371-9:1996, Type 2) or a suitable substitute treatment similar to those used in electroplating zinc (see BS 7371-3:2009) and mechanical plating (see BS?7371-7:2010). This results in a dust free surface, which, when required, can be lubricated to give controlled torque/clamping force properties (see?BS?7371?2:1993). In addition to the requirements in this part of BS 7371, the requirements in BS 7371-1:2009 that are applicable to sherardized coatings apply. This part of BS?7371?also specifies requirements for: a) the local coating thickness for six grades of coating; b) possible types of post treatment; c) the assessment of corrosion resistance of unused coated parts when subjected to neutral salt spray testing (see BS EN ISO 9227-2006).

This Part of BS 7371 specifies requirements for coatings applied by the electrolysis of solutions of zinc. NOTE The coatings consist principally of zinc and can be lubricated to give controlled torque/clamping force properties when required (see, for example, BS 7371-2). In addition to the requirements in this Part of BS 7371, the requirements in BS 7371-1 which are applicable to zinc electroplated coatings apply. This Part of BS 7371 also specifies requirements for: a) the coating thickness; b) the type of conversion treatment or topcoat to be applied; c) quality assessment of the corrosion resistance of unused coated parts when subjected to neutral salt spray testing (for example BS EN ISO 9227); and d) an adhesion test. Zinc electroplated coatings covered by this Part of BS 7371 are for use on fasteners and accessories where the following apply: 1) A coating giving galvanic protection is required for ferrous fasteners. 2) A substrate is required to improve the corrosion resistance of subsequent coatings on ferrous fasteners, e.g. organic. 3) The risk of hydrogen embrittlement of high tensile steel fasteners is acceptable.
