1.1 This specification2 covers the types, physical properties, and dimensions of cellular polystyrene boards with or without facings or coatings made by molding (EPS) or extrusion (XPS) of expandable polystyrene. Products manufactured to this specification are intended for use as thermal insulation for temperatures from -65 to +165°F (-53.9 to +73.9°C). This specification does not apply to laminated products manufactured with any type of rigid board facer including fiberboard, perlite board, gypsum board, or oriented strand board. 1.1.1 For Type XIII only, this specification covers the physical properties, and dimensions of cellular polystyrene intended for use as thermal insulation for temperatures from −297 to +165°F (−183 to +73.9°C). 1.2 Consult the manufacturer for specific recommendations and properties in cryogenic conditions. 1.2.1 This specification does not cover cryogenic properties except for the k-factors for Type XIII in Appendix X1. For Type XIII in specific cryogenic applications, the manufacturer and purchaser shall agree upon the actual temperature limits and physical property requirements in addition to the k-factors in Appendix X1. 1.3 The use of thermal insulation materials covered by this specification may be regulated by building codes that address fire performance. For some end uses, specifiers should also address the effect of moisture and wind pressure resistance. Guidelines regarding these end use considerations are included in Appendix X1. 1.4 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.5  This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

It covers rigid cellular plastics in the form of flat or profiled boards, with or without natural skins. They may also be faced or laminated with foil, plastic or metal films or sheets, mineral coatings, paper, cardboard or other materials. This International Standard is not applicable to materials used for the thermal insulation of pipes and vessels, for impact sound absorption or for acoustical insulation.

This International Standard gives guidelines to the standards writer in selecting thermal-insulation material properties for standards used in building applications. These guidelines are not intended to prove the suitability of any particular product for any given application. When standards are established or existing specifications are revised on the basis of these guidelines, the performance characteristics in these guidelines should be translated into product requirements (specified values) in the International Standard for a product or application, together with appropriate test methods, which must be fulfilled at the time of delivery, in order to ensure that the product provides the performance requirements in service. This relationship between specified values for the product and the service performance characteristic of the product in use can be different for different insulating products, depending on the characteristic of the material (e.g. ageing or time-dependent behaviour). This International Standard applies only to prefabricated thermal-insulation products, i.e. manufactured mats and boards including any facings or coverings which may be present, although the basic characteristics may also be applied to other insulation products, e.g. in situ in systems or components, where appropriate. The International Standard covers only thermal-insulation products for use in buildings within normal climatic conditions. It does not cover insulation products for building services, e.g. plumbing and heating, nor insulation products for industrial use. Acoustic properties are not included in the properties given in this International Standard, although these may be additionally required for some fields of application.

They may also be faced or laminated with foil, plastic or metal films or sheets, mineral coatings, paper, cardboard or other materials. This International Standard is not applicable to materials used for the thermal insulation of pipes and vessels, for impact sound absorption or for acoustical insulation. This International Standard covers the following cellular materials used in the thermal insulation of buildings: RC/PS based on polystyrene; RC/PUR based on polyurethanes made with isocyanates (concerning isocyanurates, see 3.3); RC/PF based on phenolic polymer. The limiting quality values in this International Standard are for use only in the specification of materials between purchaser and supplier, and are not intended to be used for design purposes. Additional requirements for special applications may be added to those specified in this International Standard by agreement between purchaser and supplier.

This Part of BS 4841 specifies requirements for the construction, composition, designation, dimensional tolerances and physical properties of two types of polyurethane (PUR) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam cored thermally insulating laminated board (roofboards) with auto-adhesively bonded reinforcing facings and cores not less than 20 mm thick, for use in roofs under built-up bituminized felt roofing materials. This Part of BS 4841 is not applicable to roofboards with reinforcing facings bonded in place after the foaming process has been completed (see clause 4).

This British Standard specifies requirements for laminated boards consisting of a core of rigid urethane foam bonded to two flexible facings. These boards are suitable for use within the cavity of heavy construction cavity walls and as insulation under screeds, but are not recommended for use in ceiling and roofing insulation. In particular, they should not be used in situations where they are liable to be directly exposed to flame in the event of fire. The end-user should satisfy himself that the finished construction will meet the appropriate requirements of the appropriate building regulations, especially in relation to fire properties.
