This European Standard specifies a method for measuring the cohesion of bituminous binders at temperatures in the range of - 10 °C to + 80 °C and for expressing the relationship between cohesion and temperature. This method is applicable for pure bitumen, modified bitumen and fluxed bitumen; in the case of fluxed bitumen, the test can be performed on the binder containing fluxant or on binder from which the solvent has been removed. For bitumen emulsions, the test is carried out on the residual binder obtained after recovery and the method used to recover the binder should be reported.

3.1 Asphalts change in volume with change in temperature. They are loaded or transferred at widely varying temperatures. Volume correction factors are used to adjust bulk volumes measured at those temperatures to corresponding volumes at a base temperature of 15°C or [60°F] for the purposes of custody transfer and accounting operations. 3.2 Correction factors as provided in this practice have proven to be sufficiently accurate for the intended purposes. 3.3 Coefficients of expansion used for development of data in this practice are as follows: Table Column A Column B 1 0.00035 0.00040 2 0.00063 0.00072 1.1 This practice provides tables of volume correction factors which may be used to convert volumes of asphalt measured at different temperatures to a volume at a standard base temperature. These tables are applicable to all types of asphalts except emulsified asphalts. 1.2 This practice provides tables to convert asphalt volumes to 15°C [60°F] from volumes measured at any temperature from −25 to +275°C [0 to 500°F]. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. Note 1: Correction factors in Table 1 and Table 2 are for use in place of correction factors provided in Guide D1250, which do not address requirements for asphalt specifications.2 (A) Use column A factors for asphalts with density at 15°C of 966 kg/m3 or higher.

4.1 This test method is a measure of the solubility of asphalt in trichloroethylene. The portion that is soluble in trichloroethylene represents the active cementing constituents. Note 2: The quality of the results produced by this standard are dependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedure and the capability, calibration, and maintenance of the equipment used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspection/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Specification D3666 alone does not completely assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; following the suggestions of Specification D3666 or some similar acceptable guideline provides a means of evaluating and controlling some of these factors. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the degree of solubility in trichloroethylene of asphalt materials having little or no mineral matter. Note 1: This method is not applicable to tars and their distillation residues or highly cracked petroleum products. For methods covering tars, pitches, and other highly cracked petroleum products, and the use of other solvents, see Test Methods D4, D2318, and D2764. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of the standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Specific precaution statements are given in Section 7.

4.1 This test method is a measure of the solubility of asphalt in n-propyl bromide. The portion that is soluble in n-propyl bromide represents the active cementing constituents. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the degree of solubility in n-propyl bromide of asphalt materials. It is intended to be a replacement for Test Method D2042 specifying a solvent that, like trichloroethylene, is safe in that it has no flash point, and has similar solubilizing characteristics to trichloroethylene, but it is not considered to be an ozone depleter banned by the Kyoto Protocol. Note 1: This method is not applicable to tars and their distillation residues or highly cracked petroleum products. For methods covering tars, pitches, and other highly cracked petroleum products, and the use of other solvents, see Test Methods D4, D2318, and D2764. 1.2 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. 4.1 Asphalt and pitch do not go through a solid-liquid phase change when heated, and therefore do not have true melting points. As the temperature is raised, they gradually soften or become less viscous. For this reason, the determination of the softening point must be made by an arbitrary, but closely defined, method if the test values are to be reproducible. 4.2 This test method is useful in determining the consistency as one element in establishing the uniformity of shipments or sources of supply. 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the softening point of asphalt and pitch in the range from 508201;°C to 1808201;°C by the cup-and-ball apparatus, and gives results comparable to those obtained by Test Method D36. Note 1: If the softening point of asphalt by this Mettler cup-and-ball method fails to meet specified requirements, tests may be rerun using the Test Method D36 (ring-and-ball) softening point apparatus as a referee method. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
