It also defines a cleanliness coding system for simplifying the reporting and communication of particulate contamination data. This International Standard specifies methods for the measurement and evaluation of gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from heavy-duty engines under transient conditions on a test bed. The procedures it defines can be applied to any transient test cycle that does not require extreme system response times; it can therefore be used as an option to the regulated measurement equipment of certification test cycles — usually CVS-type systems — with the approval of the certification agency [among certification test cycles in place are the European transient cycle (ETC) and the US heavy-duty transient cycle (FTP)]. This International Standard is applicable to heavy-duty engines for commercial vehicles primarily designed for road use, but can also be applied to passenger car engines and to engines used for non-road applications. The test equipment specified in this International Standard can also be used in steady-state test cycles, however, if so, the calculation procedures will need to be replaced by those applicable to the particular test cycle.

This part of ISO 16232 defines methods for determining the size distribution of particulate contaminants extracted from automotive components using techniques described in ISO 16232-3, ISO 16232-4 and ISO 16232-5, using automatic light extinction particle counter instruments (APC). It only applies to the analysis of the whole volume of extraction liquid. The size range of particles that can be measured by this technique is limited to u 70 µm(c), because of the method of calibration used (ISO 11171). However, the calibration can be extended to other sizes provided that it is agreed and included in the Inspection Document. This technique is only applicable to measuring particles contained in clear, single phase liquids.

This part of ISO 16232 describes a method for determining the nature of contaminant particles by identifying their elemental chemical composition using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in combination with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The contaminant particles are extracted from automotive parts or components and deposited on the surface of a membrane filter. In addition to the number and size of particles as described in ISO 16232-7, this measurement gives the elemental composition of the particles analysed. This information can be used to classify the particles into likely material groups 1). This method cannot determine the nature of organic material 2). The analyses can either be carried out manually or fully automatically, provided the appropriate equipment is available.

This part of ISO 16232 describes the principles of extraction of contaminants from a component by the agitation method. It is preferably applied to components that are hollow and are suited to being agitated by an operator or by an appropriate mechanical device. This agitation method can be employed on its own or in association with other methods of extraction described in the ISO 16232 series. Unless otherwise specified, this part of ISO 16232 deals with particulate contamination only. It does not, therefore, cover appearance defects or contamination by liquid or gaseous materials. It covers the amount and the nature of residual particles resulting from manufacturing processes and from the environment.

This part of ISO 16232 defines methods for determining the size and number of contaminant particles, which have been extracted from components and deposited on the surface of a membrane filter, as determined by using either a light optical microscope (LM) or a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The result of this measurement is the particle size distribution on the membrane filter. As the function of parts and components can be impaired by the presence of a single or a few critical particles, a complete analysis of the total membrane filter surface is essential. These analyses can be performed either manually or automatically using Image Analysis (IA) techniques if the appropriate equipment is available. NOTE 1 Manual full-surface counting is a difficult and tiring task associated with errors. For this reason, an automatic counting system is recommended if the membrane filter is prepared in a suitable way as described herein. NOTE 2 The results of counting and sizing depend on many parameters, such as type and model of microscope, magnification, illumination, and other settings used.

This International Standard specifies methods for the direct measurement of the concentration of exhaust gas emissions from road vehicles during inspection or maintenance. It is applicable to vehicles having a maximum authorized total mass (ISO-M08, as defined in ISO 1176) not exceeding 3,5 t, equipped with controlled ignition engines, but excluding those supplied with a fuel/oil mixture (with or without automatic mixer). The methods can be used, either totally or partially, for  periodic inspections in official garages,  official roadside checks (e.g. by police), and  maintenance and diagnostic operations.
