This document specifies two low voltage tests for detecting and locating defects that extend to the basis metal in vitreous and porcelain enamel coatings. Method A (electrical) is applicable to the rapid detection and determination of the general location of defects. Method B (optical), based on colour effects, is applicable to the more precise detection of defects and their exact locations. Both methods are commonly applied to flat surfaces. For more intricate shapes, such as undulated and/or corrugated surfaces, ISO 8289-2 is applicable. NOTE 1 Selection of the correct test method is critical to distinguish the areas of increased conductivity detected by method B from actual pores that extend to the basis metal, which can be detected by both methods. NOTE 2 The low voltage test is a non-destructive method of detecting defects and, therefore, is completely different from the high voltage test specified in ISO 2746. The results of the high and low voltage tests are not comparable and will differ.

What is ISO 8289-2 - Vitreous and porcelain enamels about?   The ISO 8289 series is an International Standard that covers vitreous and porcelain enamels. The main purpose of ISO 8289 is to provide low-voltage test methods for detecting and locating defects.   ISO 8289-2 is the second part of the series that specifies a low-voltage test method for detecting and locating defects that occur in enamel coatings of corrugated and/or undulated profiles and that extend down to the metal base.   The method is based on color effects (optical method) and is applicable to the precise detection of defects and their exact position. It can be used for non-flat, more profiled shapes such as corrugated or undulated surfaces.   Note: The low-voltage test is a non-destructive test for detecting defects extending down to the metal base and is, therefore, completely different in comparison to the high-voltage test...

1.1 This standard provides a method for determining the holdout characteristics of a primer and topcoat coating application. A standard topcoat is used to determine the absorption characteristics of a primer. Enamel holdout can be measured as a difference in observed gloss of the topcoat over a primer, relative to the gloss of the same topcoat over a non-porous, smooth surface. 1.2 The standard is written in the context that the user will be evaluating the enamel holdout characteristics of a primer. Alternatively, the standard may be used as a method to evaluate the enamel holdout characteristics of primer/topcoat system where the primer is constant and different topcoats are used as test paints. 1.3 This standard may also be used for evaluation of paints other than primers as the first coat. In this alteration the user can test the enamel holdout characteristics of a self-primed topcoat, or use of any other type of paint as the primer followed by the use of a standard topcoat. 1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. 1.6 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 This test method covers the determination of the reliability of glass coating on metal and is intended for use by manufacturers of equipment that is designed to withstand highly corrosive conditions where a failure of the coating in service would cause extreme damage to the exposed metal. Its use outside the manufacturer’s plant is discouraged because improper or indiscriminate testing can cause punctures that are difficult to repair without returning the equipment to the manufacturer’s plant. This test method detects not only existing discontinuities in the glass coating, but also areas where the glass may be thin enough to be likely to result in premature failure in service. 1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statements, see Section 7. 1.4 This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.

1.1 Porcelain enamel coatings are applied to metals to provide protection from corrosion as well as to enhance their appearance. This test method permits the easy detection of discontinuities and areas of light coverage, not readily seen by visual inspection, which limit the protection to the substrate. Somewhat similar tests applicable to the thicker glass coatings used for chemical reaction vessels are found in Test Methods C536 and C537. 1.2 Values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. Inch-pound units are provided for information only. 1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
