This part of IEC 61643 is applicable to gas discharge tubes (GDT) used for overvoltage protection in telecommunications, signalling and low-voltage power distribution networks with nominal system voltages up to 1 000 V (r.m.s.) a.c. and 1 500 V d.c..They are defined as a gap, or several gaps with two or three metal electrodes hermetically sealed so that gas mixture and pressure are under control. They are designed to protect apparatus or personnel, or both, from high transient voltages. This standard contains a series of test criteria, test methods and test circuits for determining the electrical characteristics of GDTs having two or three electrodes. This standard does not specify requirements applicable to complete surge protective devices, nor does it specify total requirements for GDTs employed within electronic devices, where precise coordination between GDT performance and surge protective device withstand capability is highly critical. This part of IEC 61643 – does not deal with mountings and their effect on GDT characteristics. Characteristics given apply solely to GDTs mounted in the ways described for the tests; – does not deal with mechanical dimensions; – does not deal with quality assurance requirements; – may not be sufficient for GDTs used on high-frequency (>30 MHz); – does not deal with electrostatic voltages; – does not deal with hybrid overvoltage protection components or composite GDT devices.

1.1 The main purpose of this Recommendation is to define means by which interface impedance may be measured, rather than to describe precise procedures for pre-processing, stabilizing and operating the tubes or valves to be measured, although the tube or valve operating conditions, under which the measurement of interface impedance may be made, are known to have a substantial effect on the results obtained. 1.2 It is also an objective of this Recommendation to describe means for evaluating the performance of interface impedance measuring equipment with respect to: 1.2.1 Accuracy as a function of the transconductance of the tube or valve being measured. 1.2.2 Accuracy as a function of the resistance of the interface. 1.2.3 Accuracy as a function of the time constant of the equivalent interface network. 1.3 The measuring methods and procedures described in this Recommendation are designed to provide information on the following cathode-interface impedance characteristics of tubes or valves: 1.3.1 The presence of cathode-interface impedance. 1.3.2 The equivalent resistance of cathode-interface impedance. 1.3.3 The equivalent capacitance of cathode-interface impedance. This Recommendation refers to hard (i.e. vacuum) tubes and valves for pulse modulator applications. Measurements on such tubes and valves are commonly made using nominally rectangular pulses and this will be assumed to be the general case. The definitions and methods may, of course, be extended to include other forms of pulse. Important warning Vacuum switch tubes which operate at voltages in excess of 16 kV can be expected to produce X-rays during the " turn-on " and " turn-off " periods of their " on " periods, and some very high voltage modulators may produce considerable quantities of soft X-rays during the " on " periods. Operators should ascertain that unsafe levels of radiation do not exist. The manufacturer should be consulted to determine the necessity for and the general design of suitable radiation shields.

This Recommendation deals with electronic tubes which perform the function of converting an optical image into electrical signals. These tubes are commonly called "television camera tubes" or "television pick-up tubes". At the present time, they fall into two classes: a) tubes having a photoemitting sensitive surface; b) tubes having a photoconductive sensitive surface.
