IEC 61745:2017 describes the calibration of test sets that perform end-face image analysis, also known as "near-field" or "grey-scale" analysis. The principles, however, can be applied to test sets of a different type. The procedures outlined are performed by calibration laboratories and by the manufacturers or users of geometry test sets, for the purpose of calibrating geometry test sets and for evaluating the uncertainties in measurements made on calibrated test sets. The calibration of fibre coating or cable measurement test sets is not covered by this document. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition, published in 1998, and constitutes a technical revision.This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) removal of the limitation of single mode optical fibre geometry test sets to include multimode; b) addition of a new annex as mathematical basis. This International Standard describes the launch condition requirements used for measuring multimode attenuation in passive components and in installed cable plants. In this standard, the fibre types that are addressed include category A1a (50 μm /125 μm) and A1b (62,5 μm /125 μm) multimode fibres, as specified in IEC 60793-2-10. The nominal test wavelengths detailed are 850 nm and 1 300 nm. This standard may be suitable for multimode attenuation measurements for other multimode categories and/or other wavelengths, but the source condition for other categories and wavelengths are not defined here. The purpose of these requirements is as follows: • to ensure consistency of field measurements when different types of test equipment are used; • to ensure consistency of factory measurements when different types of test equipment are used; • to ensure consistency of field measurements when compared with factory measurements. This standard describes launch condition requirements for optical attenuation using sources with a controlled encircled flux (EF).

This part of IEC 62496 specifies the test method to decide whether to pass or fail an optical circuit board using direct illumination by a light. The input ports are directly illuminated and the optical intensity from the output ports of the optical circuit board is monitored using an area image sensor. Excess optical losses are the calculated from total detected intensities of light from a sample to be measured and from a control sample. This method is used to illuminate uniformly the input port of the optical circuit board (OCB) with a larger area than the core area, obtain the radiance of an area image from the corresponding output port of the OCB using an area image sensor, and evaluate whether to pass or fail using the radiance obtained compared to that of a control sample. The advantage of this test method is that the alignment procedure between a launch fibre and the OCB is not necessary.

This part of IEC 60794 is a family specification that covers outdoor microduct optical fibre cables for installation by blowing and the associated microducts, which together make up a microduct optical fibre cable system. Although primarily designed for use with outdoor microduct applications, the cable products specified herein may be used individually for short lengths in other applications as agreed upon between supplier and customer. These may include short runs inside a building or in other outdoor applications, such as a transition between separate (unconnected) microduct systems, or from a microduct system to some other protective structure such as a cable conduit or tray. Systems built with components covered by this standard are subject to the requirements of IEC 60794-5 where applicable. Annex A shows examples of microduct optical fibre cables and microducts. Annex B describes a blank detail specification for outdoor microduct optical fibre cables and the associated microducts, and incorporates some minimum requirements. Detail product specifications may be prepared on the basis of this family specification using Annex B as a guide. Annex C provides normative requirements for microduct optical fibre cables. The parameters specified in this standard may be affected by measurement uncertainty arising either from measurement errors or calibration errors due to lack of suitable standards. Acceptance criteria should be interpreted with respect to this consideration. The number of fibres and microducts tested shall be representative of the microduct optical fibre cable design and should be agreed between customer and supplier.

IEC 62496-2:2017(E) specifies a method of defining the conditions for measurements of optical characteristics of optical circuit boards. The method comprises the use of code reference look-up tables to identify different critical aspects of the measurement environment. The values extracted from the tables are used to construct a measurement identification code, which, in itself, captures sufficient information about the measurement conditions, so as to ensure consistency of independently measured results within an acceptable margin. IEC 61280-4-4:2017(E) provides uniform methods of measuring polarization mode dispersion (PMD) of single-mode installed links. An installed link is the optical path between transmitter and receiver, or a portion of that optical path. These measurements can be used to assess the suitability of a given link for high bit rate applications, or to provide insight on the relationships of various related transmission attributes. This document focuses on the measurement methods and requirements for measuring long lengths of installed cabling that can also include other optical elements, such as splices, connectors, amplifiers, chromatic dispersion compensating modules, dense wavelength division multiplexing or multiplexer (DWDM) components, multiplexers, wavelength selective switches, re-configurable optical add drop multiplexer (ROADMS). This document focuses on the apparatus, procedures, and calculations needed to complete measurements. IEC TR 61282-9 explains the theory behind the test methods. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2006. This second edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: - theory is removed and replaced with a reference to IEC TR 61282-9; - a new method, wavelength scanning OTDR and SOP analysis (WSOSA), is added as Annex G; - a brief description of each method is added to Clause 5; - Methods E and F are converted to informative Annexes E and F; - a new Clause (6) on measurement configurations is added; - a new Clause (7) on measurement considerations is added; - Clause 10 on procedure is expanded; - several of the apparatus diagrams are improved; - several clarifications about what is measured and what is calculated have been made in Annex H.
