5.1 These test methods are used to indicate the integrity of the container and closure system in the distribution environment. 5.2 These test methods measure the ability of the container and closure system to prevent leakage when stored or transported upright, inverted, or on the side. 5.3 These test methods allow for comparison of container/closure designs of threaded and lug-style closures of similar or different materials, or different manufacturers. These tests are suitable for packaging development, engineering and tooling evaluations. 1.1 These test methods may demonstrate container/closure integrity with threaded or lug-style closures by the determination of gross leaks in rigid and semi-rigid containers (up to 4 L [1.06 g]. Such tests may be used to indicate the ability of a liquid container to survive the distribution environment without leaking. These test methods may not be suitable to determine the leak resistance of containers intended for transport of hazardous materials. 1.2 Test Methods:  1.2.1 Test Method A, Shipping Container Vibration and Storage Test, covers the ability of a shipping container and its interior packaging to protect the contents from leakage after transportation induced vibration and high-temperature storage. 1.2.2 Test Method B, Shipping Container Vibration and Vacuum Chamber Test, is suitable for individual containers and is usually less severe than Test Method A. The advantage of Test Method B is the shortness of the test. 1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in non-conformance with the standard. 1.4  This standard does not purport to address the safety conserns associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This part of ISO 18185 specifies a freight container seal identification system, with an associated system for verifying the accuracy of use, having: ? a seal status identification system; ? a battery status indicator; ? a unique seal identifier including the identification of the manufacturer; ? a seal (tag) type. This part of ISO 18185 is used in conjunction with the other parts of ISO 18185. It applies to all electronic seals used on freight containers covered by ISO 668, ISO 1496-1 to ISO 1496-5, and ISO 8323. Wherever appropriate and practicable, it also applies to freight containers other than those covered by these International Standards.

This part of ISO 18185 specifies the minimum environmental characteristics for electronic seals. This part of ISO 18185 describes the environmental requirements for the ISO 18185 series, for ISO 10374 (Freight containers — RF automatic identification) and for ISO 17363 (Supply chain applications of RFID — Freight containers), since it is expected that the implementation of these International Standards will face the same environmental conditions. However, each of these International Standards has its own unique requirements other than environmental conditions.
