This standard presents metallic material requirements to provide resistance to sulfide stress cracking (SSC) and/or stress corrosion cracking (SCC) for petroleum production, drilling, gathering and flow line equipment, and field processing facilities to be used in hydrogen sulfide (H2S)-bearing hydrocarbon service. This standard does not include and is not intended to include design specifications. Other forms of corrosion and other modes of failure, although outside the scope of this standard, should also be considered in design and operation of equipment. Severely corrosive conditions may lead to failures by mechanisms other than SSC and/or SCC and should be mitigated by corrosion inhibition or materials selection, which are outside the scope of this standard. For example, some lower-strength steels used for pipelines and vessels may be subjected to failure by hydrogen-induced cracking (blistering and stepwise cracking) as a result of hydrogen damage associated with general corrosion in the presence of H2S.

This International Standard specifies requirements and gives recommendations for the design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and preparation for shipment of constant-speed, packaged, integrally geared centrifugal air compressors, including their accessories, for use in the petroleum, chemical and gas service industries. It is also applicable to gas services other than air that are non-hazardous and non-toxic. It is not applicable to machines that develop a pressure rise of less than 35 kPa above atmospheric pressure, which are classed as fans or blowers. NOTE In this International Standard, where practical, US customary units have been included in brackets for information.

ISO 13631:2002 gives requirements and recommendations for the design, materials, fabrication, inspection, testing and preparation for shipment of packaged skid-mounted, reciprocating, separable or integral compressors with lubricated cylinders and their prime movers, for use in the petroleum and natural gas industries for the compression of hydrocarbon gas. It is also applicable to all necessary auxiliary equipment, such as water and gas coolers, silencers, emission control equipment, filters, separators, control panel, piping, etc., required to install an operable unit in compliance with the purchase specifications and with the intent of minimizing field construction and field-purchased equipment. ISO 13631:2002 is not applicable to the following: reciprocating compressors for petroleum and natural gas industries covered by ISO 13707; column-mounted compressors; non-lubricated compressors; compressors having trunk-type (automotive-type) pistons that also serve as crossheads; utility or instrument air compressors with a discharge gauge pressure of 0,9 MPa (9 bar) or less; compressors driven by diesel engine, gas turbine and steam turbine prime movers.

This part of ISO 15156 describes general principles and gives requirements and recommendations for the selection and qualification of metallic materials for service in equipment used in oil and gas production and in natural gas sweetening plants in H2S-containing environments, where the failure of such equipment could pose a risk to the health and safety of the public and personnel or to the environment. It can be applied to help to avoid costly corrosion damage to the equipment itself. It supplements, but does not replace, the material requirements given in the appropriate design codes, standards or regulations. This part of ISO 15156 addresses all mechanisms of cracking that can be caused by H2S, including sulfide stress cracking, stress corrosion cracking, hydrogen-induced cracking and stepwise cracking, stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking, soft zone cracking and galvanically induced hydrogen stress cracking. Table 1 provides a non-exhaustive list of equipment to which this part of ISO 15156 is applicable, including permitted exclusions. This part of ISO 15156 applies to the qualification and selection of materials for equipment designed and constructed using conventional elastic design criteria. This part of ISO 15156 is not necessarily applicable to equipment used in refining or downstream processes and equipment. CAUTION — Metallic materials selected or qualified using ISO 15156 are resistant to cracking in defined H2S-containing environments in oil and gas production, but are not necessarily immune under all service conditions.
