1.1 This test method describes how to determine the magnetic characteristics of magnetically hard materials (permanent magnets), particularly their initial magnetization, demagnetization, and recoil curves and such quantities as the residual induction, coercive fields, knee field, energy products, and recoil permeability. This test method is suitable for all materials processed into bulk magnets by an common fabrication technique (casting, sintering, rolling, molding, and so forth), but not for thin films or for magnets that are very small or of unusual shape. Uniformity of composition, structure, and properties throughout the magnet volume is necessary to obtain repeatable results. Particular attention is paid to the problems posed by modern materials combining very high coercivity with high saturation induction, such as the rare-earth magnets, for which older test methods (see Test Method A341) are unsuitable. An applicable international standard is IEC Publication 404-5. 1.2 The magnetic system (circuit) in a device or machine generally comprises flux-conducting and nonmagnetic structural members with air gaps in addition to the permanent magnet. The system behavior depends on properties and geometry of all these components and on the temperature. The tests described here measure only the properties of the permanent magnet material. The basic test method incorporates the magnet specimen in a magnetic circuit with a closed flux path. Test methods using ring samples or frames composed entirely of the magnetic material to be characterized, as commonly used to magnetically soft materials, are not applicable to permanent magnets. 1.3 This test method shall be used in conjunction with Practice A 34. 1.4 the preferred units and the corresponding values appearing in this test method are customary (cgs-emu) units. SI units are indicated in parentheses. When necessary, derivations of separate equations, conversion factors or the inclusion of SI values, or both, in the text of tables is specified in the text. 1.5 The names and symbols of magnetic quantities used in this test method, summarized in Table 1, are the currently preferred by U.S. industry. 1.6 This test method is useful for magnet materials having Hci values between 100 Oe and 35 kOe (8 kA/m and 2.8 MA/m), and Br values in the approximate range from 500 G to 20 kG (50 mT to 2T). High coercivity rare-earth magnet test specimens may require much higher magnetizing fields that iron-core electromagnets can product. Such samples must be premagnetized externally and transferred into the measuring yoke. Typical values of the magnetizing fields, Hmag, required for saturating magnet materials are shown in Table 1. 1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This specification covers commonly used wrought nickel-iron soft magnetic alloys produced or supplied expressly for use in magnetic cores and other parts requiring high magnetic permeability, high electrical resistivity, low coercive force, and low core loss. This specification covers materials supplied by a producer or converter to the form and physical condition desired for fabrication into parts that will later be given final heat treatment to achieve the desired magnetic characteristics. It covers materials supplied in the form of forging billets, hot-rolled plate, strip, and bar; cold-finished bar; cold-rolled and annealed sheet and strip; shaped wire; and wire. This specification doesn not cover either powder metallurgically produced or cast parts. This specification lists requirements for strip products having isotropic or semi-isotropic magnetic properties but does not include requirements for anisotropic or square hysteresis loop alloys or alloys processed to yield flattened hysteresis loops by use of heat treatments in an applied magnetic field. This specification does not cover alloys modified by the addition of elements such as sulfur and selenium to enhance machinability. The values stated in either customary (cgs-emu and inch-pound) units or SI units are to be regarded separately as standard. Within the text, the SI units are shown in brackets. The values stated in each system are not exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with this specification.

1.1 This specification covers the general requirements to which flat-cast, amorphous, semi-processed, iron-base magnetic core alloys must conform. 1.2 These alloys are produced by a rapid-quenching, direct-casting process, resulting in metals with non-crystalline structure. The metallic alloys are made to meet specified maximum core-loss values and are intended primarily for commercial power frequency (50 and 60 Hz) applications in magnetic devices. Desirable core-loss and permeability characteristics are developed by further heat treatment in a magnetic field by the buyer. The heat treatment typically consists of heating the material to a temperature of 320 to 420176C in a dry, inert atmosphere for 5 to 10 min. A magnetic field may be required during annealing as designated by the manufacturer. Exact optimum annealing conditions depend on the processing of the material and the size and shape of the device. 1.2.1 The chemical, magnetic, and physical properties are listed for reference only. They are typical values for a particular alloy and do not constitute a standard specification for that alloy. 1.3 Some of these alloys are sensitive to mechanical stress. Care must be exercised in minimizing any stresses on the material in its final application, otherwise, its magnetic properties will be impaired significantly. 1.4 This specification is developed to aid in the purchase of transformer grade amorphous strip. It provides the chemical, physical, and magnetic parameters and procedures for quality control tests. Note-For more information on procedures associated with this specification, refer to the following: Practices A34, A664, A700, and B490; Test Methods A370 and A773. 1.5 This standard does not purport to address the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This specification covers free-machining ferritic stainless soft magnetic materials produced or supplied expressly for use in magnetic cores and other parts requiring a high permeability stainless steel having low-coercive force and low-residual magnetism. The specific alloy types have corrosion resistance similar to AISI Type 430F and Type 430F Specification A582. Two specific type alloys are covered in Table 1. This specification covers these alloy types supplied in billet or bar form in shapes such as rounds, squares, hexagons, octagons, or special shapes. Certain cold finish round bar products are capable of being supplied to required magnetic characteristics such as low-residual magnetism. Other product forms of these alloy types can not be produced having equivalent low-residual magnetism; hence, final machined parts shall be heat treated as recommended by the producer. The following safety hazard caveat pertains only to the test method portions in Annex A1 of this specification. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Magnetic properties are expressed in cgs-emu units followed by the SI unit equivalent enclosed in parentheses.

This part of IEC 60404 specifies the methods of measuring the d.c. magnetic properties of magnetically soft materials in a closed magnetic circuit using either the ring or the permea-meter methods. The ring method is suitable for use with laminated or solid ring specimens as well as ring specimens produced by sintering. Two methods are used: a) the ring method, particularly for magnetic field strengths of up to 10 kA/m; b) the permeameter method for magnetic field strengths in the range 1 kA/m to 200 kA/m. NOTE The measurement of coercivity in an open magnetic circuit is specified in IEC 60404-7.
