This International Standard is applicable to performance and endurance tests for secondary batteries used for vehicle propulsion applications. Its objective is to specify certain essential characteristics of cells@ batteries@ monoblocks@ modules and battery systems used for propulsion of electric road vehicles@ including hybrid electric vehicles@ together with the relevant test methods for their specification. The tests may be used specifically to test batteries developed for use in vehicles such as passenger vehicles@ motor cycles@ commercial vehicles@ etc. This standard is not applicable to battery systems for specialist vehicles such as public transport vehicles@ refuse collection vehicles or heavy duty vehicles@ where the battery is used in the similar way to the industrial vehicles. The test procedures are defined as a function of the vehicle requirements of performance. This standard is applicable to lead-acid batteries@ Ni/Cd batteries@ Ni/MH batteries and sodium based batteries used in electric road vehicles. Annex A specifies performance and cycle life test procedures of Ni/MH batteries used for the propulsion of hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). NOTE This standard is not applicable to lithium-ion batteries for automobile application that are specified in IEC 62660-1@ IEC 62660-2@ ISO 12405-1 and ISO 12405-2 (to be published).

The cells of this kind of lead-acid battery may either have flat-plate electrodes in prismatic containers or have spirally wound pairs of electrodes in cylindrical containers. The sulphuric acid in these cells is immobilized between the electrodes either by absorption in a microporous structure or in a gelled form. NOTE The dimensions@ terminals and marking of the lead-acid cells and batteries which are applied by this standard are given in IEC 61056-2. This part of IEC 61056 does not apply for example to lead-acid cells and batteries used for ? vehicle engine starting applications (IEC 60095 series)@ ? traction applications (IEC 60254 series)@ or ? stationary applications (IEC 60896 series). Conformance to this standard requires that statements and claims of basic performance data by the manufacturer correspond to these test procedures. The tests may also be used for type qualification.

1.1 Scope. 1.1.1* This standard shall cover performance requirements for stored electrical energy systems providing an alternate source of electrical power in buildings and facilities in the event that the normal electrical power source fails. 1.1.2 Systems covered in this standard shall include power sources, transfer equipment, controls, supervisory equipment, and accessory equipment, including integral accessory equipment, needed to supply electrical power to the selected circuits. 1.1.3 This standard shall cover installation, maintenance, operation, and testing requirements as they pertain to the performance of the stored emergency power supply system (SEPSS). 1.1.4 Exclusions. 1.1.4.1 This standard shall not cover the following: (1) Application of the SEPSS (2) Distribution wiring (3) Systems having total outputs less than 500 VA or less than 24 V, or systems less than Class 0.033 (4) Unit equipment (5) Nuclear sources, solar systems, and wind stored-energy systems (6) Uninterruptible power systems (UPS) supplied by an emergency power supply system (EPSS) 1.1.4.2 The following shall not be within the scope of this standard: (1) Specific buildings or facilities, or both, requiring an SEPSS (2) Specific loads to be served by the SEPSS (3) Type, class, or level to be assigned to any specific load (See Section 4.1.)
