(1)P The scope of Eurocode 6 for Masonry Structures as given in 1.1.1 of EN 1996-I-1:2005 applies also to this EN 1996-3. NOTE: Eurocode 6 deals only with the requirements for resistance, serviceability and durability of structures. Other requirements are not considered. Eurocode 6 does not cover the special requirements of seismic design. (2)P EN 1996-3 provides simplified calculation methods to facilitate the design of the following unreinforced masonry walls, subject to certain conditions of application: walls subjected to vertical loading and wind loading; walls subjected to concentrated loads; shear walls; -- basement walls subjected to lateral earth pressure and vertical loads; -- walls subjected to lateral loads but not subjected to vertical loads. (3)P The rules given in EN 1996-3 are consistent with those given in EN 1996-1-i, but are more conservative in respect of the conditions and limitations of their use. (4) For those types of masonry structure or parts of structures not covered by (1), the design shall be based on EN 1996-1-1. (5) This EN 1996-3 applies only to those masonry structures, or parts thereof, that are described in EN 1996-1-1 and EN 1996-2. (6) The simplified calculation methods given in this EN 1996-3 do not cover the design for accidental situations.

This European Standard specifies the characteristics and performance requirements of masonry units manufactured from natural stone the width of which is equal to or greater than 80 mm, for which the main intended uses are common, facing or exposed masonry units in load bearing or non-load bearing building and civil engineering applications These units are suitable for all forms of coursed or random masonry walling, including single leaf, cavity, partition, retaining and the external masonry to chimneys. They can provide fire protection, thermal insulation, sound insulation and sound absorption. This European Standard includes natural stone masonry units of an overall non-rectangular parallelipiped shape, specially shaped and accessory units for internal and external application. It defines the performance related to e.g. strength, petrographic description, density, porosity, dimensional accuracy, thermal conductivity, water absorption, and frost resistance and provides for the evaluation of conformity of the product to this European Standard. The marking requirements for products covered by this European Standard are also included. This European Standard does not cover storey height panels, natural stone for paving, chimney flue linings nor units intended for use as damp proof course.

Masonry specimens are sometimes removed as part of an assessment of the condition of masonry construction. Such specimens are commonly prepared for shipment to a laboratory where the specimens are assessed with visual techniques, petrographic techniques, or standard test methods. The process of selecting, removing, and shipping the specimens can have an effect on test results. This practice provides procedures for selecting, removing, and shipping masonry specimens removed from existing construction. The selection and removal processes described in this practice are primarily intended for walls. Selection and removal of masonry specimens from locations other than walls requires user judgment in order to obtain appropriate specimens. This practice also covers reporting of the selection, removal, and shipping processes. This information allows interested parties to assess the impact of these processes on test results. This practice does not address the use of test results conducted on removed masonry specimens. This practice does not determine whether the removed masonry materials met original specification requirements.1.1 This practice covers the process of selection, removal, and shipment of masonry specimens from existing construction that are intended for testing. These specimens can be either individual masonry units or assemblages. Assemblages are a portion of existing masonry, typically consisting of masonry units, mortar, grout, reinforcing steel, collar joint, and masonry accessories. The specimens may be taken from single- or multiple-wythe construction, or portions thereof. This practice also covers procedures for reporting as part of this process.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory requirements prior to use.

(1)P The basis for the design of buildings and civil engineering works in masonry is given in this Part 1-1 of Eurocode 6, which deals with unreinforced masonry and reinforced masonry where the reinforcement is added to provide ductility, strength or improve serviceability. The principles of the design of prestressed masonry and confined masonry are given, but application rules are not provided. This Part is not valid for masonry with a plan area of less than 0,04 m. (2) For those types of structures not covered entirely, for new structural uses for established materials, for new materials, or where actions and other influences outside normal experience have to be resisted, the principles and application rules given in this EN may be applicable, but may need to be supplemented. (3) Part 1-1 gives detailed rules which are mainly applicable to ordinary buildings. The applicability of these rules may be limited, for practical reasons or due to simplifications; any limits of applicability are given in the text where necessary. (4)P The following subjects are dealt with in Part 1-1: ? section 1 : General; ? section 2 : Basis of design; ? section 3 : Materials; ? section 4 : Durability; ? section 5 : Structural analysis; ? section 6 : Ultimate Limit State; ? section 7 : Serviceability Limit State; ? section 8 : Detailing; ? section 9 : Execution; (5)P Part 1-1 does not cover: ? resistance to fire (which is dealt with in EN 1996-1-2); ? particular aspects of special types of building (for example, dynamic effects on tall buildings); ? particular aspects of special types of civil engineering works (such as masonry bridges, dams, chimneys or liquid-retaining structures); ? particular aspects of special types of structures (such as arches or domes); ? masonry where gypsum, with or without cement, mortars are used; ? masonry where the units are not laid in a regular pattern of courses (rubble masonry); ? masonry reinforced with other materials than steel.

This part of BS 5628 gives general recommendations for the design, construction and workmanship of masonry, including materials and components and the main aspects of design, other than structural, which is covered by BS 5628-1 and -2. The recommendations in this standard are based on experience of single-leaf and cavity walls with and without insulation within the cavity. No specific recommendations for the use of random rubble walling are given, the methods of construction and appearance of which vary locally according to traditional practice and the type of stone available. However, general principles are laid down in this standard. This standard does not cover the use of natural stone panels as cladding to structural masonry and steel and concrete frames. NOTE Recommendations about the use of natural stone panels as cladding to structural masonry and steel and concrete frames are given in BS 8298. This standard is not necessarily appropriate to the repair and restoration of old buildings. Guidance on cleaning and surface repair of masonry built of natural stone, cast stone and brick is given in BS 8221. This standard does not necessarily cover the use of proprietary systems. The user is referred to the particular recommendations of any technical approval in this case.

This part of BS 5628 gives recommendations for the structural design of reinforced and prestressed masonry constructed of brick or block masonry or masonry of manufactured stone or square dressed natural stone. NOTE The dimensions of a member determined from strength considerations may not always be sufficient to satisfy requirements for other properties of the member such as resistance to fire and thermal insulation, and reference should be made to other appropriate standards.

This Part of BS 5628 gives recommendations for the structural design of unreinforced masonry units of bricks, blocks, manufactured stone, square dressed natural stone, and random rubble masonry. NOTE The thickness of a wall determined from strength considerations may not always be sufficient to satisfy requirements for other properties of the wall such as resistance to fire, thermal insulation, sound insulation or resistance to damp penetration and reference should be made to BS 5628-3 or BS 5390, as appropriate. It has been assumed in the drafting of this code that the design of masonry is entrusted to chartered structural or civil engineers or other appropriately qualified persons, for whose guidance it has been prepared, and that the execution of the work is carried out under the direction of appropriately qualified supervisors.
