This PAS specifies requirements for the designation, testing, factory production control, installation documentation and marking for different types and configurations of flood protection products intended to be demountable, for use away from buildings, but may be sealed against structures or buildings at section ends, in the UK or locations with similar exposures, i.e. where there is a temperate climate and advanced warning of flooding is available. This PAS specifies the method of testing and an allowable leakage rate. NOTE 1 The PAS test conditions represent typical conditions that may be experienced during a flood. This includes testing the product on a concrete base for leakage and structural failure under static water levels, random waves up to 0.1 m high and parallel currents up to 1.0 m/s. NOTE 2 This PAS does not cover testing with contaminated or saline water, however, product manufacturers are required to provide information about the performance of their products in these conditions (see Annex C). NOTE 3 Conformance of the product does not mean it is suitable for all locations, exposures and foundation types. If the user is in any doubt as to the suitability of a product to any specific location, they should seek further guidance as set out in Temporary and demountable flood protection: Interim guidance on use [1] or from the Flood Protection Association (www.floodprotectionassociation.org) or other professional advisers. NOTE 4 Extreme loading conditions such as those resulting from turbulent water or from debris impact are not covered by testing in this PAS. In these locations the product should be specifically designed and/or tested to withstand such stresses. NOTE 5 Demountable flood protection products are normally installed in conjunction with a pumping arrangement to remove any excessive leakage. NOTE 6 The flood protection products described in this part of PAS 1188 are not intended for permanent installation, and attention is drawn to the need to ensure a free passage to persons in the event of an emergency and to access and egress for persons with impaired movement. These products should only be installed in the event of an imminent flood and should be removed as soon as danger from flooding is over. This PAS is not applicable to flood protection products for installation across building apertures such as individual doors, windows, air-bricks and air vents or around buildings; these are covered by PAS 1188-1 and PAS 1188-3. This PAS is not applicable to temporary flood protection products which are not location specific in their use, are intended to be wholly installed during a flood event and wholly removed afterwards; these are covered by PAS 1188-2. This PAS does not specifically test flood protection products for coastal conditions. Where flood protection products are intended for coastal conditions, advice on suitability should be obtained from the manufacturer.

This PAS specifies requirements for the designation, testing, factory production control, installation documentation and marking for different types and configurations of flood protection products. This PAS is applicable to flood protection products intended for use in the temporary sealing of building apertures and entrances to properties, in the event of static flood water rising up to a level between 600 mm and 900 mm above ground level, except where they are designed to completely cover or replace small apertures, such as air-bricks or air vents. This PAS is intended for use in the UK or locations with similar exposures, i.e. where there is a temperate climate and advanced warning of flooding is available. This PAS specifies the method of testing and an allowable leakage rate. The range of building aperture sizes covered is a nominal width of up to 2 400 mm. NOTE 1 The hydrostatic pressures exerted by floodwater can cause sudden or long-term structural damage and undermine the foundations of a building or cause leakage through the walls, floor or sub-floor, unless the building is specifically designed to withstand such stresses. The actual water level that can be safely retained by the external walls will depend upon the construction, type, form, age and condition of the walls. It is recommended that a suitably qualified building surveyor, architect or structural engineer inspects the external walls, before any flood protection product for building apertures is installed. NOTE 2 Flood protection products are not normally intended to prevent water more than 600 mm to 900 mm above the level of the ground surrounding the property from entering the building. NOTE 3 The PAS test conditions represent typical conditions that can be experienced during a flood. This includes testing the flood protection product for leakage under static water levels, waves up to 0.1 m high and parallel currents up to 1.0 m/s. NOTE 4 This PAS does not cover testing with contaminated or saline water, however, product manufacturers are required to provide information about the performance of their products in these conditions (see Annex C). NOTE 5 Conformance of the flood protection product does not mean it is suitable for all situations. If the user is in any doubt as to the suitability of a flood protection product they should seek further guidance as set out in Preparing for floods: Interim guidance for improving the flood resistance of domestic and small business properties [1], or from the Flood Protection Association(www.floodprotectionassociation.org) or other professional advisers. NOTE 6 Extreme loading conditions such as those resulting from turbulent water or from debris impact are not covered by testing in this PAS. If required in these locations, the flood protection product needs to be specifically designed and/or tested to withstand such stresses. NOTE 7 The flood protection products described in this part of PAS 1188 are not intended for installations providing permanent flood protection, and attention is drawn to the need to ensure a safe evacuation of persons in the event of an emergency and to access and egress for persons with impaired movement. These flood protection products are installed or activated in the event of an imminent flood and removed or deactivated as soon as danger from flooding is over. This PAS is not applicable to the testing of foam products, such as those composed with composite polyurethane. This PAS is not applicable to flood protection products for installation around buildings; these are covered by PAS 1188-3. This PAS is not applicable to temporary or demountable flood protection products which are designed to be installed away from and not attached to buildings, including flood protection products intended for installation across driveway entrances and gateways at property boundaries. These are covered by PAS 1188-2 and PAS 1188-4.

This test method evaluates RECPs and their means of installation to: 5.1.1 Reduce soil loss and sediment concentrations in stormwater runoff under conditions of varying rainfall intensity and soil type, and; 5.1.2 Improve water quality exiting the area disturbed by earthwork activity by reducing suspended solids. This test method models and examines conditions typically found on construction sites involving earthwork activities including: highway and roads; airports; residential, commercial and industrial developments; pipelines, mines, and landfills; golf courses; etc. This test method is a performance test, but can be used for quality control to determine product conformance to project specifications. Caution is advised since information regarding laboratory specific precision is incomplete. For project specific conformance, unique project-specific conditions should be taken into consideration. Note 18212;The quality of the result produced by this standard is dependent on the competence of the personnel performing it, and the suitability of the equipment and facilities used. Agencies that meet the criteria of Practice D 3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objective testing/sampling/inspections/etc. Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance with Practice D 3740 does not itself assure reliable results. Reliable results depend on many factors; Practice D 3740 provides a means of evaluating some of those factors.1.1 This test method covers the guidelines, requirements and procedures for evaluating the ability of Rolled Erosion Control Products (RECPs) to protect hillslopes from rainfall-induced erosion. Critical elements of this protection are the ability of the RECP to:1.1.1 Absorb the impact force of raindrops, thereby reducing soil particle loosening through "splash" mechanisms;1.1.2 Slow runoff and encourage infiltration, thereby reducing soil particle displacement and transport through "overland flow" mechanisms;1.1.3 Absorb shear forces of overland flow; and,1.1.4 Trap soil particles beneath.1.2 This test method utilizes full-scale testing procedures, rather than reduced-scale (bench-scale) simulation, and is patterned after conditions typically found on construction sites at the conclusion of earthwork operations, but prior to the start of revegetation work. Therefore this considers only unvegetated conditions.1.3 This test method provides a comparative evaluation of an RECP-to baseline bare soil conditions under controlled and documented conditions.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to inch-pound units, which are provided for information only and are not considered standard.1.5 All observed and calculated values shall conform to the guidelines for significant digits and rounding established in Practice D 6026, unless superseded by this standard.1.5.1 The procedures used to specify how data are collected/recorded or calculated, in this standard are regarded as the industry standard. In addition, they are representative of the significant digits that generally should be retained. The procedures used do not consider material variation, purpose for obtaining the data, special purpose studies, or any considerations for the user''s objectives; and it is common practice to increase or reduce significant digits of reported data to be commensurate with these considerations. It is beyond the scope of this standard to consider significant digits used in analytical methods for engineering design. This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility......

This test method evaluates temporary ditch checks and their means of installation to: 5.1.1 Reduce soil loss and sediment concentrations in stormwater runoff under conditions of varying channel conditions and soil type; and 5.1.2 Improve water quality exiting the area disturbed by earthwork activity by reducing suspended solids. This test method models and examines conditions typically found on construction sites involving earthwork activities, including: highways and roads; airports; residential, commercial and industrial developments; pipelines, mines, and landfills; golf courses; etc. This test method is a performance test. It is a comparative tool for evaluating the erosion control characteristics of different temporary ditch checks and can be used for quality control to determine product conformance to project specifications. Take caution when comparing results from different laboratories because information about between-laboratory precision is incomplete and slight differences in soil and other environmental and geotechnical conditions may affect temporary ditch check performance. Unique project-specific conditions should be taken into consideration. 1.1 This test method covers the guidelines, requirements, and procedures for evaluating the ability of temporary ditch checks to protect earthen channels from stormwater-induced erosion. Critical elements of this protection are the ability of the temporary ditch check to:1.1.1 Slow and/or pond runoff to encourage sedimentation, thereby reducing soil particle transport downstream; 1.1.2 Trap soil particles up stream of structure; and1.1.3 Decrease soil erosion.1.2 This test method utilizes full-scale testing procedures, rather than reduced-scale (bench-scale) simulation, and is patterned after conditions typically found on construction sites at the conclusion of earthwork operations, but prior to the start of revegetation work. Therefore this test method considers only unvegetated conditions.1.3 This test method provides a comparative evaluation of a temporary ditch check to baseline bare soil conditions under controlled and documented conditions.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. The inch-pound units given in parentheses are provided for information purposes only.1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. Also, the user must comply with prevalent regulatory codes, such as OSHA (Occupational Health and Safety Administration) guidelines, while using the test method.

Proper installation is critical to effective performance of silt fence. This practice presents procedures for installing silt fence that have been shown to result in silt fence installations that effectively redirect and impound surface runoff and, thereby, provide effective sediment control.1.1 This practice covers common installation requirements for temporary silt fence applications. This practice is based on AASHTO M288.1.2 This practice is applicable to the use of silt fence as a vertical permeable interceptor designed to remove suspended soil from overland, nonconcentrated water flow. The function of a temporary silt fence is to trap and allow settlement of soil particles from sediment laden water. The purpose is to greatly limit the transport of eroded soil from the construction site by water runoff.1.3 The practices presented herein are intended to ensure good workmanship and quality and are not necessarily adequate for all purposes in view of the wide variety of possible sediments and performance objectives.1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values in inch-pound units are provided for information only.1.5 This practice offers an organized collection of information or a series of options and does not recommend a specific course of action. This document cannot replace education or experience and should be used in conjunction with professional judgment. Not all aspects of this guide may be applicable in all circumstances. This ASTM standard is not intended to represent or replace the standard of care by which the adequacy of a given professional service must be judged, nor should this document be applied without consideration of a project''s many unique aspects. The word "Standard" in the title of this document means only that the document has been approved through the ASTM consensus process.1.6 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
