This part of IEC 61375 applies to the architecture of data communication systems in open trains, i.e. it covers the architecture of a communication system for the data communication between vehicles of the said open trains, the data communication within the vehicles and the data communication from train to the ground. The applicability of this part of IEC 61375 to the train network technologies allows for interoperability of individual vehicles within open trains in international traffic. The data communication systems inside vehicles are given as recommended solutions to cope with the said TCN. In any case, proof of compatibility between a proposed train backbone and a proposed consist network will have to be brought by the supplier. This part of IEC 61375 may be additionally applicable to closed trains and multiple unit trains when so agreed between purchaser and supplier.

This document is a Technical Report about the basic standard. It is applicable to the same systems and addresses the same audience as the standard itself. It enhances information on specific items on the application of EN 50129. The following items are covered, within the scope of this Application Guideline of EN 50129, as follows:  Clause 4 deals with identification and mitigation of failures in the concept, specification and design phases. It is mainly dedicated to designers and verifiers and product safety engineers;  Clause 5 deals with the preparation of a safety case, enhancing points providing the required evidence for safety assessment and approval. It is mainly dedicated to verifiers, validators, safety managers, quality managers and safety engineers;  Clause 6 deals with the activities an Independent Safety Assessor has to carry out. It is mainly dedicated to safety assessors, safety authorities, safety managers and safety approvals. This standard defines the protocol for intercar and intracar serial data communications between subsystems aboard passenger trains. This Technical Report will define - requirements for the methods to be used for functional standardisation, in the standards to be prepared for data exchange involving railway vehicles, in two contexts 1) inter-consists communication, within a train formation, 2) communication with ground based installations. - the Reference Architecture defining the essential functional interfaces, - the concept of a central Data Dictionary/repository to be applied to freight and passenger traffic functions. In this context, data are to be limited to basic information elements, which are necessary to define standard messages required for interoperability, and displayed on the interfaces of the communicating entities. Entering Data Dictionary will provide full definition of a data element, along with its essential attributes at conceptual level. The purpose, in the perspective of the standards to be prepared, is to document the data element pertinent to the functional area and essential for interoperability, to allow the reuse of data element among functional area systems, and facilitate data interchange among the systems. NOTE Data Dictionary shall be designed to provide a structural framework that enables continued growth and enhancement of the scope of defined data. Rationale for this requirement is that it is difficult, when defining the scope of a proposed system to fully define the application domain and all included interoperability related data. In addition over time, functional requirements will expand.

The scope of this Technical Report is to define the ERTMS DMI in STM mode for each system include in Annex B of STI CC. This Technical Report defines the ergonomics for the Specific Transmission Module integrated in the Driver-Machine Interface (DMI) for the ERTMS/ETCS Train Control System, and for the integrated ERTMS/GSM-R Train Control and Train Radio Systems. The ergonomics covers the – general arrangements (dialogue structure, sequences, layout philosophy, colour philosophy), – symbols, – audible information, and – data entry arrangements. The reasons for defining the ergonomics of the DMI are as follows: 1. Achieving harmonised and coherent presentation for ERTMS/ETCS and STM information. Given the large number of STM’s requiring the use the ERTMS/ETCS DMI, only a harmonised approach is feasible. 2. Defining Driver-Machine Interface ergonomics that is compatible with agreed interoperable ERTMS specifications. 3. To reduce the risk of incorrect operation by a driver working with different trains fitted with ERTMS/ETCS. 4. Facilitating train operation with a unified ergonomics, hence reducing the cost of driver training. This Technical Report is applicable on all trains fitted with the ERTMS/ETCS.

This part of IEC 61375 applies to data communication in Open Trains, i.e. it covers data communication between vehicles of the said open trains and data communication within the vehicles of the said open trains. The applicability of this standard to the train communication bus (WTB) allows for interoperability of individual vehicles within Open Trains in international traffic. The data communication bus inside vehicles (MVB) is given as recommended solution to cope with the said TCN. In any case, proof of compatibility between WTB and a proposed vehicle bus will have to be brought by the supplier. This standard may be additionally applicable to closed trains and multiple unit trains when so agreed between purchaser and supplier. NOTE 1 For a definition of Open Trains, Multiple Unit Trains and Closed Trains, see 1.3. NOTE 2 Road vehicles such as buses and trolley buses are not considered in this standard.

This Technical Specification describes from an ergonomic point of view how ERTMS information shall be arranged and displayed. This Technical Specification describes more ergonomic details than currently provided by the ERTMS/ETCS/GSM-R specifications. This Technical Specification defines the ergonomics for the Driver-Machine Interface (DMI) for the ERTMS/ETCS Train Control System, and for the integrated ERTMS/GSM-R Train Control and Train Radio Systems, and for the stand alone ERTMS/GSM-R Train Radio Systems and for other technical systems currently provided on the engines. The ergonomics covers the: general arrangements (dialogue structure, sequences, layout philosophy, colour philosophy); symbols; audible information; data entry arrangements. The aims of the ERTMS/ETCS/GSM-R Train Control and Train Radio Systems are standardised systems facilitating interoperable movement of trains and permitting economies of scale in procurement and operations. The objective of this Technical Specification is to define the minimum requirements on the DMI that are necessary to enable these objectives to be achieved. Hence the Technical Specification is limited to ergonomic considerations and does not define the technology to be used for the implementation. The reasons for defining the ergonomics of the DMI are as follows: achieving harmonised and coherent presentation for ERTMS/ETCS and STM information.
