This measurement method may be used particularly during vehicle type approval tests. Loading conditions of vehicles are specified in annex A. They are to be used except when legal regulations require different loading conditions. Annex B establishes a classification of headlamps, and gives examples of measurement methods applicable according to the classification. Annex C gives a photometric method of determining the position of a point of the conventional cut-off, which is complementary to one of the measurement method examples in annex B. This International Standard is applicable to motor vehicles as defined in ISO 3833.

The data represented here has been condensed from the original survey that was conducted by telephone interviews and faxes. The information contained within is limited to technical data as it pertains to vehicle and on- board MAYDAY systems operations. It does not contain business, marketing, or any proprietary technical information. The complete survey results are in the possession of the SAE. The purpose of this survey was to determine whether the general concept and architecture on which the SAE J 2313 MAYDAY Message Set was being developed is consistent with those of current MAYDAY system hardware manufacturers. The survey was not intended for MAYDAY service providers or public service answer points and emergency service providers. Further studies, perhaps by organization such as NENA or APCO, may be necessary to develop a complete vision of how complete MAYDAY response centers and systems may be implemented.

To assure field replacement, it is important that bulb types employed be readily available in normal service channels. This document attempts to define the physical, electrical, and photometric characteristics necessary to achieve a proper replacement for popular types of bulbs. Some of the design characteristics in this document are listed solely for the sake of standardization and are not intended to describe the performance of lighting devices (lamp assemblies) on the vehicle.
