Turbine engines installed in rotorcraft have an exhaust system that is designed and produced by the aircraft manufacturer. The primary function of the exhaust system is to direct hot exhaust gases away from the airframe. The exhaust system may consist of a tailpipe, which is attached to the engine, and an exhaust fairing, which is part of the rotorcraft. The engine manufacturer specifies a baseline referee tailpipe design, and guaranteed engine performance is based upon the use of the referee tailpipe and tailpipe exit diameter. The configuration used on the rotorcraft may differ from the referee tailpipe, but it is intended to minimize additional losses attributed to the installation. This Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) describes the physical, functional, and performance interfaces to be considered in the design of the aircraft exhaust system.

This AIR describes a Limited Engine Monitoring System that can be used by the flight crew or the maintenance staff, or both, to monitor the health of gas turbine engines in aircraft. This SAE Aerospace Information Report includes procedures for the analysis of a gas turbine engine start. It utilizes a standard form for the essential starting characteristics of the gas turbine engine and for the starting power capability of the aircraft battery. This report illustrates the format of the characteristic which is provided by the electric starter to transform the battery electric power (voltage and current) to the mechanical power (torque and speed) required to successfully start the engine. An aircraft engine start battery typically also serves as a backup source for emergency electrical energy. Guidelines are therefore provided for the determination of battery capacity to fulfill the emergency energy requirements of the aircraft. The purpose of this information report is to provide a general analysis guide for the optimization of the design of a battery/electric-starter starting system for turbine-engines, including determination of appropriate minimum ratings for both Power (Imp) and one hour energy (C1 capacity).

Generally it is desirable during static engine noise testing to simulate the noise-generating processes that occur during takeoff or landing. One factor that may have significant influence on fan noise from turbofan engines during static testing is the airflow distortion encountered by the low-pressure fan stage.
