The determination is carried out by converting the carbonyl compounds to oximes by reaction with free hydroxylamine liberated in a mixture of hydroxylammoniumchloride and potassium hydroxide. The excess alkali is titrated with hydrochloric acid solution, either colorimetrically or potentiometrically. The method is applicable to essential oils which contain carbonyl compounds (especially ketones, excluding methylketones) which are difficult to convert to oximes by the method specified in ISO 1279. The method is not applicable to essential oils which contain substantial amounts of esters of other alkali-sensitive constituents.

The method consists in hydrolysis of the esters present in a test portion by heating in the presence of a standard volumetric solution of potassium hydroxide in dimethylsulfoxide, and back-titration of the excess potassium hydroxide with a standard volumetric solution of sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid.

This method is applicable to essential oils containing an appreciable proportion of tertiary alcohols, namely of linalol and terpineol. It is not applicable to essential oils containing appreciable proportions of phenols, anthranilates, lactones and aldehydes.

The determination consists in slow and progressive cooling of the essential oil and observation of the variations in temperature as the oil passes from the liquid to the solid state. The apparatur for determination of freezing point consists of a wide-mouthed container of about 500 ml capacity, provided with a bored cork or rubber stopper into which a stout-walled test tube is inserted. Another smaller test tube is fitted into the stout-walled test tube by means of another bored cork or rubber stopper. Into the smaller test tube a thermometer is inserted.
