Solids (nonvolatile matter) determinations of polishes, resin solutions, and wax emulsions take 2 to 4 h in accordance with Test Method D 2834, not counting preparation time. Curves of solids/refractive index provide a means for determining solids in a matter of minutes. This practice is particularly useful for quality control and in process control for the production of polishes and polish components.1.1 This practice covers the use of a refractometer for determining the nonvolatile matter (total solids) in floor polishes. This practice is also applicable to resin solutions and wax emulsions used in floor polishes. 1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

All five of the test methods described will produce polish films from emulsion floor polishes which can be used for various performance tests. The choice of test method is left up to the individual laboratory.1.1 These test methods cover procedures for application of emulsion floor polish films to suitable substrates for testing purposes. Five test methods are covered, as outlined in Section 3. 1.2 These procedures are limited to use on flat, rigid substrates mounted, if necessary, on a nonabsorbent backing. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are provided for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

This test method provides a satisfactory means of determining the relative efficiency of aerosol formulations when applied as direct sprays to cockroaches. It is not designed to measure the residual action. As a biological test, it is subject to the variations that accompany the reactions of living organisms. It should be employed under the supervision of personnel familiar with the biological testing of insecticides. In order to measure the effectiveness with reasonable tolerance, the test is run in conjunction with the Official Test Aerosol II (OTA II) as the standard basis of comparison. Another standard that may be used with this test method is the Tentative Official Aqueous Pressurized Spray (TOAPS). 1.1 This test method covers the determination of the effectiveness of aerosol and pressurized spray insecticides against cockroaches. 1.2 Test data by this test method may also be adequate to support claims for use of the product to control the exposed or accessible stages of silverfish, ants, centipedes, spiders, and certain stored product pests. 1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Whiteness index obtained from reflectance measurements on exaggerated dried polish films on filter paper can be used as a measurement of the color of such films. Whiteness index may be useful in predicting the potential discoloring effect of polish films on flooring substrates. Whiteness index should be useful in specifications when color comparisons are made with a standard sample polish.1.1 This test method covers comparing colors of films (or solids) deposited from the emulsified particles in water emulsion floor polishes. Vinyl composition tile or flooring consists of vinyl resins (suitably plasticized and stabilized) fortified with composition fibers, mineral fillers, and prime pigments. In some cases, all or part of the wearing surfaces may consist of unfilled vinyl resin that is clear or translucent. Metallic accents (chips, pigment, etc.) are frequently used to form the overall design. In general, the overall binder content is lower than that of homogeneous vinyl tile. For the purpose of this practice, vinyl composition also includes vinyl asbestos tile.1.1 This practice covers the application of floor polishes to maintain vinyl composition tile or flooring. Floor polishes are applied to vinyl composition tile floors for protection and beautification of the floor surface. Cleaning, polish application, removal, and maintenance procedures are important functions in this process.1.2 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. Multilayer composite tile or flooring may consist of a decorative pattern layer and a transparent wear layer. Some floors may also include a stress absorbing foam layer or a backing layer of other type. Included in the composition are vinyl resins, suitably plasticized and stabilized, with or without fortifying fibers, mineral fillers and prime pigments. Metallic accents (chips, pigments, etc.) are frequently used to form the overall design. The transparent wear coating is usually polyurethane, acrylic or vinyl. Although the transparent wear layer provides an extra measure of protection, the surface is subject to the same wear and tear as other types of floors.1.1 This practice covers the application of floor polishes to maintain multilayer composite tile or flooring. Floor polishes are applied to multilayer composite floors for protection and beautification of the floor surface. Nonvolatile matter determination is useful as a quality control test, when used in conjunction with other tests, to assure specification compliance.1.1 This test method covers the determination of nonvolatile matter (total solids) in a water-emulsion, organic solvent-based liquid and paste floor polishes, and polymer-emulsion-type floor polishes. 1.2 This test method recognizes that the products may contain material that will slowly volatilize or change chemically with a resulting change in weight of the nonvolatile matter. Therefore, since drying to constant weight is impractical, specific drying times have been selected. 1.3 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are for information only. 1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use.
