Predictive Modelling of Bio-Inspired Materials

【Abstract】

In this talk I will describe the challenges and opportunities encountered in designing materials at the nanoscale and present recent research in which massively parallel computer simulations are used to guide experiments. I will describe our attempts to decipher design rules for the creation of organic assemblies that provide alternative “bottom up” materials for space- and energy-efficient electrical switches and memory storage units, and which demonstrate molecular-level computation, learning and power generation.

在本讲座中,我将介绍在纳米尺度上设计材料所遇到的挑战和机遇,并介绍利用大规模并行计算机模拟来指导实验的最新研究,和我们在破解有机组合物设计规则方面的尝试。这些组合物为空间和能源效率高的电子开关和记忆存储单元提供了 "自下而上 "的替代材料,并展示了分子级计算、学习和发电。

【BIOGRAPHY】

Damien Thompson is Full Professor of Molecular Modelling at University of Limerick. He leads a team of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers at the Bernal Institute in predictive materials modelling for health and energy applications with a strong focus on miniaturization and sustainability. He is Scientific Director of the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Biopharmaceuticals and leads the Modelling activities of the centre in rational design of novel supramolecular architectures. His research interests span from quantum mechanical modelling of metal-organic memristors to meso scale modelling of antibody formulations, all of which hinge on the ability to embed desired properties through controlled molecular motion and molecular recognition.
