1. Introduction
The purpose of a profile is to recommend how certain information technology standards should be used to satisfy one or more specific requirements. In particular, a profile should determine which options available in the Base Specifications are necessary or desirable if the specific requirements are to be met.
This profile applies to Message Handling Systems within the general context of the OSI Reference Model. It is referred to as profile A/MH12 in the CEN/CENELEC/ETSI memorandum M-IT-02.
The scope of this profile is the specification of the conformance rules for a Message Store (MS) and an MS-user, when inter-acting. This is a generic profile and may need to be used in conjunction with a content specific profile.
This profile describes the services and communications provided by a Message Store to its User Agent.
Elements of Service, protocol elements and abstract operations are classified in a modular way (functional grouping) such that implementations may support the functional groups which are appropriate to meet their requirements.
End User Services and local UA functions are not covered by this profile. In particular, mechanisms for the origination and the rendition of graphic characters are outside the scope of this profile.
NOTE: Throughout this document, the term "User Agent" or "MS-user" is used without distinction.

4 Maintenance
The user is invited to check with the EWOS secretariat if any defect reports or corrigenda to this profile are available. They may be obtained from:
European Workshop for Open Systems Attn: Mr. Luc Van Den Berghe Rue de Stassart, 36 B -1050 Brussels BELGIUM
Such documents may be subject to conformance.
5 Base Specifications and imports
The Base Specifications comprise the X.400 series of Recommendations and the ISO/EC 10021 MOTIS Standard as modified by the MHS Implementors' Guide and the published ISO/EC Technical Corrigenda.
This profile should be read in conjunction with ENV 41214 and ENV 41219 which are essential to the understanding or application of this profile.
This profile makes use of: for the MS:
- MTS Elements of Service from annex C of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MRSE from annex B of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MSSE from annex C of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MASE from annex C of ENV 41219
- MessageDeliveryEnvelope from annex C of ENV 41219
- ReportDeliveryEnvelope from annex C of ENV 41219
for the MS-usen
- MTS Elements of Service from annex B of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MRSE from annex B of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MSSE from annex B of ENV 41219
- MTS Elements for MASE from annex B of ENV 41219
- MessageDeliveryEnvelope from annex B of ENV 41219
- ReportDeliveryEnvelope from annex B of ENV 41219
This profile also makes use of the security functional group and its associated classes, as defined in ENV 41214.
