This Standard specifies a method for the determination of the erucic acid (cis-13-docosenoic acid) content in animal and vegetable fats and oils, whether or not hydrogenated, even if cetoleic acid (cis-11-docosenoic acid) is present. Cis-15-docosenoic acid present will be expressed as erucic acid. NOTE: In general, erucic acid can be determined using Gulf standard mentioned in (2.3) and without separation by thin-layer chromatography but the level may be overestimated because of the presence of fatty acids such as cetoleic acid which produce peaks at the same place on the chromatogram. The use of the present Gulf standard enables a more accurate determination to be made, of particular use when the level found using Gulf standard mentioned in (2.3) is above a set maximum.
