tools, materials, coatings and processes have steadily advanced to the current state of the art. This paper will
cover the progression from mechanicalmachines with complex drive trains using the five cutmethod of cutting
gears with coolant, tomachines with direct driveCNC technology dry cutting gears by the completing method
with carbide and high speed steel tools. The latest cutting tool materials and tool coatings will be discussed.
Production examples from the automotive and truck industries will be provided, as well as examples from the
