1.1.1
This Standard provides a minimum specification for use by purchasers, or specifiers of a fire sprinkler system for buildings, used solely as a residence conforming to 1.2.1 .which will with substantial reliability, control a fire occurring in that building so that survival conditions are maintained throughout the building for at least 20 minutes.
The Standard specifies minimum requirements for the design, material, fabrication, installation, ongoing testing and maintenance, and approval of such systems.
Where there is a water supply of longer duration (at least 1 hour) and a fire sprinkler inlet is available to supplement supply, and the certainty of a fire fighting response, and valve monitoring is enhanced by a fire brigade automatic alarm connection, limits on the maximum size and height of buildings considered suitable for protection by sprinkler systems complying with the Standard are increased.
NOTE - In the selection of a 20 minute period during which fire control must be maintained, it is assumed that an orderly evacuation can and will be undertaken within the duration of the water supply and that a supporting fire fighting response will arrive at the building.
1.1.2
The Standard provides an integrated set of rules. Only those systems complying in all respects with this Standard may be deemed to comply. Evidence of compliance shall be a current certificate issued in accordance with 1.4.
