1.1.1 This Standard covers the workmanship, materials, equipment and testing required for the application of metal-arc welding to the fabrication, assembly and repair of steel structures made by combinations of rolled plates, rolled sections (excluding reinforcing bars), hollow sections, built-up sections, castings and forgings by the following welding processes:
(a) Manual metal-arc
(b) Submerged arc
(c) Gas shielded metal-arc
(d) Flux cored arc
(e) Gas flux cored arc
(f) Electroslag (including consumable guide)
(g) Electrogas.
The Standard is limited to the welding of steel parent material with a specified minimum yield strength not exceeding 450 MPa or a carbon equivalent not exceeding 0.53%.
1.1.2 The Standard is intended to apply to the welding of all types of welded steel work in structures, including structures designed in accordance with NZS 3404, bridges for both roads and railways, and cranes and hoists. It is not intended to cover the welding of boilers, pressure vessels, piping and pipelines where such welding is covered by the respective application standards.
1.1.3 Where any other standard named in this Standard has been declared or endorsed in terms of the Standards Act 1965, then —
(a) Reference to the named standard shall be taken to include any current amendments declared or endorsed in terms of the Standards Act 1965; or
(b) Reference to the named standard shall be read as reference to any standard currently declared or endorsed in terms of the Standards Act 1965 as superseding the named standard, including any current amendments to the superseding standard declared or endorsed in terms of the Standards Act 1965.
