A factory shall not be overcrowded with machinery, materials or products as to cause risk of injury and to the health of the persons employed in the factory. 1.1.2 The amount of cubic space for every person in any workroom shall not be less than 11.5 m3. 1.1.3 In calculating the amount of cubic space in any room, no deduction shall be made for benches or other furniture, material and no space more than 4 m from the floor shall be taken into account. Where a room contains a gallery, the gallery shall be treated as if it were partitioned off from the remainder of the room and formed a separate room. 1.1.4 Every workroom shall be not less than 3 m in height measured from the floor to the lowest point of the ceiling or, where there is no ceiling, to the lowest point of the roofing materials. 1.1.5 Sufficient space shall be provided around the individual machines or process units to allow for normal operation, adjustments and ordinary repairs, and for storage of materials supplied, in process, or completed. 1.1.6 Any workplace and passage between machines, installations or piles of material shall as far as practicable be at least 600 mm wide. 1.1.7 Means of escape shall be provided for all factories as specified under the Code of Practice for Fire Precautions in Buildings issued by Singapore Civil Defence Force. Required exits shall be clearly visible and kept readily accessible, doors shall not be locked from the inside and shall be unobstructed at all times during the occupancy of the premises. 1.1.8 The entrance to every exit on every floor shall be clearly indicated by an "Exit" sign placed over the exit door. The height of this sign shall be between 2.0 m and 2.5 m, the signs should be placed at least about 300 mm below the ceiling level. This is to enable the sign to be visible when smoke starts to build up beneath the ceiling. The form and dimensions of the exit sign shall comply with the requirements stated in SS 364. The exit sign shall be illuminated at all times in accordance with the requirements stated in SS CP 19. 1.1.9 In long corridors, in open areas and in all situations where the location of the exits may not be readily visible, directional signs shall be provided to serve as guides from all positions of the corridors or floor. 1.1.10 A means of egress from the interior of the building to an exterior space shall be provided by the use of the following either singly or in combination: exterior door openings, exit staircases, exit ramps or exit passageways but not including access stairs, aisles, corridor doors or corridors. 1.1.11 The maximum travel distance to the nearest exit shall not exceed 30 m (if unsprinkled) and 45 m (if sprinkled). Where there is only one escape route, the maximum travel distance shall not exceed 13 m (if unsprinkled) and 19 m (if sprinkled).
