Scope
This document describes a test method for determining the extent and rate of aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials on marine sandy sediments at the interface between seawater and the seafloor by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide released. This test method is also applicable to other solid organic materials. This test method is to simulate the habitat environment of different seawater sedimentation areas in the ocean under laboratory conditions, such as the benthic area (light area) where the sun shines on the seabed, which is called the coastal kelp in marine science. Determination of the biodegradation of plastic materials and other solid materials buried in marine sediments is outside the scope of this document. Note: The determination of aerobic biodegradation can also be obtained by monitoring the oxygen consumption, see GB/T40611-2021 for the method. The conditions described in this document may not correspond to the optimum conditions for maximum biodegradation to occur.
