Scope

GB9387-88 describes the basic reference model for Open System Interconnection (OSI), which establishes a framework for the coordinated development of existing and future system interconnection standards. The purpose of the OSI basic reference model is to enable the interconnection of heterogeneous computer systems to achieve effective communication between application processes. Security controls must be established in various situations to protect the information exchanged between application processes. Such controls should be such that the cost of illegally obtaining or modifying data is greater than the potential value of doing so, or the time required to obtain the desired data is so long that the value of the data is lost. This standard establishes the general elements related to the security architecture, which can be applied to various occasions where communication protection between open systems is required. To complement existing standards related to open systems interconnection or to develop new standards for secure communication, this standard establishes some guidelines and constraints within the framework of the reference model, thus providing a consistent approach to solving security problems in OSI . Some background on security is beneficial for understanding this standard. We recommend that readers who are not familiar with security issues read Appendix A (Reference) first. This standard extends the basic reference model and involves some aspects of security issues. These aspects are general elements of the communication protocol architecture, but are not discussed in the basic reference model.
