This standard specifies a convention for abstract syntax, called Abstract Syntax Notation - (ASN.1). This standard defines some simple types and their notation, and specifies the notation for referring to these types and values of these types. This standard defines mechanisms for constructing new types from more primitive types, and specifies the notation for defining and assigning labels to these structured types, and for specifying values of these types. This standard (by reference to other standards) defines the character set used in the context of ASN.1. This standard defines some useful types (using ASN.1), which can be used by ASN.1 users. The ASN.1 notation can be used whenever an abstract syntax for defining a residence is required. It is used especially for application layer protocol standards, but not only. The ASN.1 notation is also referenced by other presentation layer standards. These standards define encoding rules for simple types, struct types, string types, and other useful types of ASN.1.
