This standard describes the instruments used to measure frequency-weighted and time-averaged sound pressure levels. This type of instrument can also have the function of measuring sound exposure level. This standard complies with the relevant requirements in IEC651 "Sound Level Meter". It also stipulates the additional characteristics necessary for measuring the equivalent continuous sound pressure level Leq of steady sound, intermittent sound, fluctuating sound and impulsive sound. Note: The standardization of instruments used to measure equivalent continuous sound pressure levels and sound exposure levels does not mean that these measurements fully characterize the psychological and physiological effects of sound on humans. The instrument is called "integrated average sound level meter", also referred to as "integrated sound level meter" or "average sound level meter". "Integrating sound level meter" is used in this standard. Although this standard specifies the complete integral sound level meter, the combination of a conventional sound level meter conforming to IEC651 and an accessory or plug-in that can provide average capability is also allowed as long as it meets this standard. There are some important differences between the time-averaging characteristics of integrating sound level meters and those of conventional sound level meters, see Appendix A (reminder appendix) for details. This standard specifies four types of integral sound level meters with accuracy levels, which are designated as types 0, 1, 2 and 3. For each type of integrating sound level meter, the specifications of its directional characteristics, frequency weighting and amplifier characteristics are equivalent to IEC651. The average characteristic and indicator characteristic are different from IEC651, and it should be noted that the specifications of type 2 and type 3 sound level meters are the same. If there is an "R" mark on the integrating sound level meter, it means that the integrating sound level meter is calibrated for diffuse field (see 2.3.3 and 9.1).
