- This standard specifies the nomenclature system for polystyrene (PS) molding and extrusion materials. This standard can also be used as the basis for classification. Different types of polystyrene resins are distinguished by a classification system based on assigned characteristic property values and recommended uses and/or processing methods, important properties, additives, and colorants. Characteristic properties of polystyrene resins are Vicat softening temperature and melt mass flow rate. This standard applies to amorphous polystyrene homopolymer. This standard applies to conventionally used materials modified and unmodified by colorants, additives, fillers, etc. This standard does not apply to expandable polystyrene, styrene copolymers, homopolymers of styrene derivatives and those modified with other polymers, such as elastomers. Materials named the same in this standard do not necessarily have the same properties. This International Standard does not provide data describing engineering data, performance data, and processing conditions required for a particular use and/or processing method of a material. Refer to relevant standards if necessary. Additional requirements may be given in character group 5 in order to specify a particular use of a polystyrene material or to ensure reproducibility of processing.
