Scope: This Guidance Technical Document presents the set of standards for describing local area networks, especially those using the 48-bit address format. Various technologies described in this guiding technical document have the ability to provide sufficient support for the MAC service specified in ISO/IEC 15802-1. Therefore, the scope of this guidance technical document is limited to those standards that describe the processes and procedures of the data link layer and physical layer belonging to the OSI basic reference model and are considered to be relevant to local area networks. This technical guidance document does not describe new service or protocol definitions per se. Its purpose is to determine the ins and outs of various LANs, which includes both the standard describing FDDI and various technologies described by the GB/T 15629 (ISO/IEC 8802) standard set.
