Scope
1.1 General This standard applies to the test of electric submersible pump cable system. Generally, cable tests fall into two categories: factory tests and field tests. This standard addresses field testing procedures only. Factory testing provides assurance that the finished product will meet the expected performance specifications for the intended application. All tests involved are designed to detect defects in the material and fabrication of the entire cable. For new cables, typical tests include: alternating current, direct current, insulation resistance and conductor resistance, which are included in such as IEEE400, IEEE1017, IEEE1018 and IEEE1019. As with either test, it should be recognized that in actual testing, electrical defects in damaged cables may not be detectable, since the tests are conducted under test conditions relative to well conditions. Consequently, more costly failures ensue for damaged downhole cables. The test is simply an indication of current insulation, not a guarantee of future performance of the cable. 1.2 Structure This standard discusses the field testing of electric submersible pump cable systems and is mainly divided into three parts: the first part presents general definitions, terminology overview, safety conditions and preparation guidelines for cable systems (Chapter 2 to Chapter 6) . The second part describes different situations in which testing is performed (Chapters 7 through 10). The third part describes the test methods and test procedures (Chapter 11 to Chapter 14). 1.3 Competence This standard covers generally accepted practices for submersible cable systems. Each installation should comply with all applicable local, state and national rules and regulations.
