Scope
This standard is applicable to the measurement of steep wave front overvoltages caused by operation or destructive discharge in gas-insulated metal-enclosed substations (GIS), especially for the measurement of the following three steep wave front overvoltages [1] (superscript *) Device and the whole measurement system: a) internal steep front overvoltage; b) transient enclosure voltage; c) external steep front overvoltage. The time parameters considered in this standard are limited to 10 μs. The procedure for estimating the uncertainty of measurement applies to the test level for internal steep-front overvoltages as described in IEC 61259. Uncertainty estimates are based on typical waveforms in the expected internal steep front overvoltage produced by the test circuit specified in IEC 61259. This standard: a) defines the terms used; b) describes the general characteristics of the steep-wave front overvoltage; c) gives the characteristics of each of the three steep-wave front overvoltages; d) gives the requirements for the measurement system; e) describe some possible measurement systems (more details can be found in technical literature [2]); f) describe the calibration procedure of the measurement system; g) only give the internal steep wave front Guidelines for estimating the uncertainty of the peak overvoltage of a typical steep front in voltage measurements (similar methods can be used to estimate the uncertainty of the peak of the transient enclosure voltage or of an external steep front).
