This International Standard specifies the notation used for the narrative format, ie the type of characters used in the representations of data elements and the length of these representations. Additional notations for the numerical representation of values are also specified. The scope of this standard is limited to graphic characters such as numbers, letters and specific characters. Control characters are not included. These rules apply wherever there is reason to prescribe these characteristics. Applications include data element dictionaries, information processing, and EDI.
