Scope: This standard provides specifications for mechanical, electrical, and signaling protocols for high-performance, point-to-point efficient simplex interfaces between data processing equipment. The interfaces described in this standard can operate at peak data rates of 800 Mbit/s or 1 600 Mbit/s over distances over 25 m using copper cables. The distance-independent signaling protocol allows the average data rate to approach the peak data rate even when the transmission distance exceeds the HIPPI-PH specification. The purpose of this standard is to facilitate the development and application of computer systems by providing a common interface at the physical layer and data framing layer. The interface provides efficient interconnection between different computers, high-performance display systems, and high-performance intelligent block transfer peripherals. The interface is optimized for larger block transfers.
