Scope
This standard involves the evaluation and selection of CASE tools, which covers part or all of the software engineering life cycle. It establishes the process and activities applicable to the evaluation of CASE tools and the selection of the most suitable CASE tool from several candidate solutions. These processes are generic, so each organization must tailor them to suit its needs. The CASE tool evaluation and selection process should be viewed in the larger context of the organization's technology adoption process. This International Standard provides: a) guidance for determining an organization's requirements for CASE tools; b) guidance for mapping the organization's needs to the characteristics of the CASE tool to be evaluated; The process of suitable CASE tools. The primary users of this standard are organizations that intend to adopt CASE tools to support their software life cycle processes. Providers of CASE tools can also use this standard to describe the characteristics of their CASE tools. This International Standard does not apply to: a) software engineering frameworks intended to provide mechanisms for the integration of data, control and presentation; b) common tools (such as word processors, spreadsheets) that may be used in software engineering activities, or CASE tools with a very narrow scope or specific purpose (such as compilers); c) plans for implementing CASE tools within the organization (although this is considered a very important topic). Note: The user can make the best choice for the CASE tool according to this standard, however, success is not guaranteed. ISO/IEC JTC1 SC7 WG4 is drafting a technical report, namely "Adoption of CASE Tools" which deals with this issue. This International Standard contains a set of processes, activities and tasks to be tailored. The process of tailoring is the process of selecting appropriate processes, activities and tasks. This standard is met when the processes, activities, and tasks selected in this standard are used to evaluate and select items. Any organization that enforces this standard is responsible for specifying the minimum set of processes, activities and tasks that constitute a consistent set of processes for a given application of this standard. Defining and documenting these becomes part of the initiation process (see Chapter 5).
