Scope

This standard applies to household and similar residual current monitors (hereinafter referred to as RCM) with a rated voltage not exceeding AC 440 V and a rated current not exceeding 125 A. RCM is used to monitor the residual current in the equipment, and send an alarm signal when the residual current between the live parts and the exposed conductive parts or the ground exceeds a predetermined value. RCM detects suddenly applied or slowly rising ac residual current and pulsating dc residual current (see 8.16). This standard applies to devices that can simultaneously perform functions such as detecting residual current, comparing the residual current value with the residual operating current value, and providing a specified alarm signal when the residual current exceeds the residual operating current value. This standard does not cover RCMs with internal batteries. The technical requirements of this standard apply to normal environmental conditions (see 7.1). Supplementary technical requirements may be necessary for RCMs used in locations with severe environmental conditions. This standard does not cover insulation monitoring devices (IMDs), which fall within the scope of IEC 61557-8. Note: The difference between RCM and IMD is that the monitoring function of RCM is passive and can only respond to the unbalanced fault current of the monitored device. The monitoring and measuring functions of the IMD are active, and it can measure the balanced and unbalanced insulation resistance or impedance of the equipment (see IEC 61557-8).
