Scope: This standard specifies the design principles of the apparatus and the minimum requirements to be met for the determination of laboratory steady-state heat transfer properties of building components and similar components used in industry. Due to the variation of various requirements (especially in terms of dimensions), it is not possible to limit a specially designed device and specify operating conditions within a narrow range. This standard gives a description of the device, the measurement technique and the data that must be reported. This standard does not apply to the determination of special components, such as windows, in which case additional procedures are required which are not covered by this standard. This standard also does not consider the effect of moisture migration (or redistribution) on heat flow measurements, but should be considered in the design and operation of the device. The thermal properties measurable in this standard are heat transfer coefficient and thermal resistance, and two alternative methods are specified: calibration hot box method and protective hot box method. This standard is applicable to the measurement of large-sized heterogeneous test pieces in the laboratory. Also suitable for the determination of homogeneous test pieces, which is necessary for calibration and verification. This standard does not apply to the measurement of mass transfer through the specimen during the test.
