This standard specifies the basic principles of ergonomics in the design of work systems, defines related basic terms, and describes the overall approach to work system design. This approach requires the ergonomist to work collaboratively with others involved in system design. "Working system" in this standard generally refers to various working environments. This standard is intended to provide guidance for the improvement, design or modification of working systems. The definitions and guidelines for ergonomics specified in this standard apply to the design of an optimal working environment with regard to the quality of human life, safety and health, while also taking into account technical and economic effectiveness and efficiency. The guidelines in this standard apply not only to the design of work systems, but also to any other design related to human activities (for example, the design of products for domestic use and leisure activities).
