Scope
1.1 This standard specifies the method for determining the water absorption in the thickness direction of flat or curved solid plastics. This standard also specifies the measurement of the water absorption of a specified plastic test specimen size when the specimen is immersed in water or under certain humidity conditions. For single-phase materials, assuming the Fick diffusion behavior with constant water absorption in the thickness direction of the sample, the water diffusion coefficient through the thickness direction can be determined. The model is valid for testing of homogeneous materials and reinforced polymer binders below the glass transition temperature. However some two-phase binders, such as cured epoxy resins, may require a multiphase absorption model and are not covered by this standard. 1.2 The water absorption and/or diffusion coefficient of the material is suitable for comparing the equilibrium water absorption of plastics exposed to the same conditions. Comparing material properties under non-humidity equilibrium conditions is not limited to single-phase Fickian diffusion behavior. 1.3 Another situation is to immerse a plastic sample of a specified size in water or a specified humidity for a certain period of time. This method can be used for comparison of different batches of similar materials, or for quality control of a given material. All specimens shall be as identical as possible, having the same physical property ie surface finish. internal stress, etc. However, under these conditions the equilibrium water absorption of the samples cannot be achieved, so the test cannot be used to compare the water absorption of different types of plastics. In order to ensure the reliability of the results, it is recommended that the tests be carried out simultaneously. 1.4 The results obtained in this standard are applicable to most plastics, but not to foams, granules or powders which have hygroscopicity and capillary effect. Plastics are exposed to humid conditions for a certain period of time, which can be used to compare plastics with each other. The test to determine the diffusion coefficient is not applicable to all plastics. Method 2 does not apply to plastics that do not retain their shape after immersion in boiling water (see 6.4).
