This standard specifies the value of the safety distance to prevent access to mechanical danger zones in industrial and non-industrial environments. Safety distances apply to protective measures. This standard also gives information about the safety distance to prevent free access of the lower limbs to the danger zone (see 4.3). This standard applies to persons aged 14 and over (the 5th percentile of height for persons aged 14 is approximately 1 400 mm). Additionally, for the upper extremities, information is provided for children over 3 years of age (the 5th percentile of height for a 3-year-old child is approximately 900 mm) for access through openings. These safety distances apply where adequate safety can be achieved by distance alone. Because safety distances are based on size, persons with certain extreme dimensions can reach the danger zone even if the requirements of this standard are met. The chapters related to the lower limbs involved in this standard do not take into account the unforeseen contact hazards of the upper limbs in the risk assessment. The safety distance is designed to prevent people from touching the danger zone under specified conditions (see 4.1.1).
