Scope
This standard specifies a test method for determining the final anaerobic biodegradability of plastics in aqueous culture solution. The test conditions used in this standard are not necessarily the optimum conditions for producing the maximum biodegradation rate. Although sludge can have a longer retention time in industrial anaerobic digestion equipment, it is usually 25 days to 30 days, and this standard stipulates that the test period can be up to 60 days. The method is applicable to the following materials: natural and/or synthetic polymers, copolymers and mixtures thereof; plastics containing additives such as plasticizers, pigments, etc.; water-soluble polymers; which do not inhibit the inoculum under the test conditions materials with microbial activity. Inhibition can be determined using inhibition controls or other appropriate methods (see ISO 13641). If the test material inhibits the inoculum, other inoculum or pre-exposed inoculum may be used at a lower test concentration.
