Scope: This part of GB/T 5959 specifies the safety requirements for industrial and commercial resistive heat tracing systems for heating pipes, vessels, roofs, concrete slabs and other similar applications. Heat tracing systems to which this standard applies may include factory-assembled or field (worksite)-assembled units, as well as series and parallel heating cables, heating pads or heat tracing panels that have been assembled and/or terminated in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Typical applications include, but are not limited to: a) frost protection of pipes, tanks and vessels, and including fire water systems; b) insulation of equipment, including pipes, tanks and vessels; c) geothermal storage; d) hot water insulation; e ) surface snow melting; f) roof and gutter deicing. This section does not cover applications in potentially explosive atmospheres or does not provide any safety requirements for them. This section does not involve induction, impedance or skin effect heating. This standard specifies general safety requirements for the installation, operation and maintenance of heating systems and individual circuits, as well as for the design of heating systems. These safety precautions relate to the protection of persons and the environment from hazards caused by electrical and certain non-electrical factors and apply to all types of equipment and installations.
